Very nice to put it mildly. The only combo Dac/Headphone amp I like better is the April Music Eximus DP-1. I have been living with an HP-A8 on my desk for about 4 months or so. I have had no desire to change it out. It sort of reminds me of a Mcintosh piece. If the display on had a blue hue you would never know the difference It is a very sound flexible piece like the TH900. I have not found that it is skewed towards one music genre over another. It is very linear sounding. More neutral than anything else. I have no complaints other than the manual does not go over all the functionality of the menu system. A new firmware was just released and I am waiting to hear back from Fostex on all the changes. Very interesting that they incorporated a digital output that you can then use the pieces as a USB to SPDIF converter to then send on to your high end 2 channel dac for a speaker set up or something along those lines. I have not played around with the SD card slot that much but you can load it with DSF DSD files not to be confused with DFF files. I was waiting for the new firmware to be able to do this over USB as I am to busy or lazy to deal with making SD cards I do have one card I have used to test functionality and it sounds fantastic. I also use the piece with powered speakers on my desktop. Thus using it also as a Preamp. First rate in that functionality as well. All in all a great product. Really no negatives I have been able to find yet. On a side note the unit is almost dead quite with my JH 16Pro Truphase. I have to turn it way over normal listening levels to hear back ground hiss. Just an FYI for those of you who like to use IEMs with headamps.
Any impressions on the HP-A8C drew?
I sent a question regarding my current setup.. Thanks!
