I am so confused. So I ordered my HE-400 and velour pads, 8/3/12 off Head-Direct. Today I got a message saying it was shipped today 8/6/12 and I should be getting them tomorrow. I live in NJ and it says it's being shipped from NJ through Fedex. I thought Head-Direct used USPS, not Fedex. I also thought Head-Direct ships from China. What's going on?

Sometimes FedEx/UPS handle things until it gets to your local PO, then they take over.

They have a US location now. Pretty sure you're getting it from there. They told me to ship mine to that location for the exchange...

Guys, just wanted to share...I am using logitech free app to measure the sound dB...even with not so high dr songs HE-400 hit 73 dB with E17 (18 vol on 12dB)....hearing more that 73dB will cause hearing loss in long run...

Have you taken a look at the Audioengine D1 or the Arcam rPAC?  For the money, I really like the D1 and the HE400 and with the D1, you don't have to buy the sound card to get RCA out. I use the D1 RCA out to drive a Boston desktop system.
Listening to the HE400 right now with the D1 (Best of Art of Noise / Blue CD with the remixes and some Deadmou5) and it's quite engaging. Sometime I wonder why I just did not stop here. I find the D1 has much better drive andy dynamics than the E17.  Not to knock the FiiO stuff but my E10 and E17 are pretty much retired.

Love that I'm seeing more people suggesting the D1. This is one of the best kept secrets in budget audio, IMO. The DAC chip they use is often used in some much higher priced gear, and the amp section is surprisingly good for headphones that are appropriate for it. I'm going to buy a 2nd one later this year.

I find the D7000 to do better with Dolby Headphone, but the HE400 is clearer and better balanced. Also, the HE400 sounds a LOT more airier, though actual soundstage is similar. Overall, I'd say the soundstage is better on the HE400 due to it's open air sound, though the D7000's positional cues are better positioned.

This is preliminary, and you're getting very early impressions which is subject to change. I honestly haven't gamed with them enough to say that this is 100% exactly how I will feel once my guide is updated with the HE400.

The E11 is slightly stronger than the E17's amp section, leaving the soundcard (plus the benefit of Dolby Headphone for gaming) vs the E17's DAC+bass and treble control.

You have to ask yourself what's better for you.

The E17 is portable, and is a dac/amp. The E11 is just an amp, and doesn't have treble control (not that the HE400 needs such a thing).

Personally, if you don't have a DH device, and play games on PC, I'd go for that Xonar card plus the E11. The E9/E09K would be quite a bit better than the E11 for $40 more, but it isn't portable, and don't have bass boosts. Still, the bass boost isn't something I don't feel the HE400 needs.

I have a Xonar DG currently and use DH avidly with movies and games (about 50% of the use my headphones. The other 50% is music, I think the DG has an ok DAC already so idk if I should go for the E17. My portable setup is just my iPhone 4S, it has a decent DAC, and I wouldnt be able to use the E17 dac with it anyway, so I thought maybe the E11 and my current DG is a better choice than an E17

Yeah, I'd go for the E11 in your position (the amp section should be similar if not better than the E17s), though I'm not sure how the E17's dac would compare to the Xonar DG for music purposes.

Got my 400s through a tad too exciting flight today. That carry case is luckily really doing its job!

Now time to do extensive testing with the Benchmark DAC-1

I think that odd angling has been mentioned earlier in the thread, some models are delivered like that.
It happens with completely circular headphones. Its nothing to worry about, just bend it back in place.
