I have a HE-400i and want a HE-400S, but I also want a new dac/amp. Which one should I get. The 400S is about 230$ and the DAC/Amp is the ifi Nano DSD which is 199.99$. Which one should I go for? I can only get one of them and it'll be a while until I can get something at the same price point of either. I listen to music and play games on PC.

First of all, you need to know what is limiting the sound quality now. If you are streaming spotify, there is no point for you to get a DAC/Amp for it because any integrated sound card will be good enough to decode them. However, if you have plenty of loseless music files, then the source would not be limitation anymore. In this case you can consider to get a DAC/Amp.

I always suggest to my friends: Upgrade your source and your headphone first. Then DAC/Amp.

I personally like the 400S more than the i’s but your preference might be different.
