Now I have bought the k550's.
But to my brother:
You say hd 439 is good but isn't the hd 449 better? I thought the hd 449 was an upgrade to the hd 439?

The HD449 pads are pleather and may need a new replace after 2-3years of use where as the HD439 pads are velour; it won't make your ears sweat and it's more comfortable, as for SQ,the HD439 have so slightly more bass (lower end of the FR), and it's slightly darker as well

Now the choise for my brother is between hd 439 and shure 440. Which is best?

They are pretty different to compare. The HD439s are more comfortable while the SRH-440s are more neutral however the HD439 have much better bass respond than the SRH-440 in terms of both depth and quantity. SRH-440 have better vocal while the HD439s' vocals are thrown backward in comparison. Soundstage and imaging the HD439 takes the lid.
