To be honest I did not know that they could vary.
But even if they were different I do not think that this could ever make such an obvious difference.

From my experience, the new HD650 (white damping material) does not sound like the new HD580 (white-damping material). The HD650 I used was completely stock without any modification. The Hd580 on the other hand, was a modified edition with the HD600 grills and HD650 cable virtually making it an HD600+.

after reading the 5 page thread, I was wondering if the newer HD650 sounds relatively the same as the HD600?

If you get the older HD650, can you change to the silk material that the newer HD650 have?

I'm extremely skeptical about this "big" difference between "new" and "old" 650 phones. But, I'm a skeptic by nature.
