Hey Head-Fiers,

I heard you guys were the internet haven for headphone help, so I decided to get on here and get myself some. Here's my problem:

I bought these Sony earbuds (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+Earbud+Headphones+-+Black/8703414.p?id=1199496037667&skuId=8703414&IcsCsid=2-39-1092-25-5-18783-5897-25-1092-820-25-1092-3650-0-2) one or two days after Christmas of 2009. So I've had them a little over a year. I used them almost every day, for approximately 3-5 hours.

I would wrap them up when I was done (not around my iPod, but very loosely in a circle around my hand, and put them up on a shelf in their own little spot. I didn't pull the jack in or out of my iPod constantly or anything of that sort. A few days ago, the left ear started going on me. Now to get them to work I have to try to situate them in a very specific position, and even then, they won't work. Frustrated as I am, I've basically caved in and decided to get new earbuds. That's where you come in.

I'm by no means an audiophile. To illustrate, if you're familiar with those headphones I had, I thought they were great-sounding (even though I'm sure they're nothing to what you guys are used to). So I don't really need audiophilic headphones, but I would like ones with some degree of quality. I don't care too much about the form, as long as they're like those, and not something like these (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+Sports-Clip+Earbud+Headphones+-+Black/9808915.p?id=1218177168588&skuId=9808915), since I find them uncomfortable.

I mainly listen to hip-hop, rock, and metal, with some pop and lighter stuff like that. I don't know if that matters or not. Lastly, I want to stay in the range of $60. No more than $75, but I'd be reluctant to even go that steep.

Also, is there anything I can do to assure that my next pair of headphones last longer? I'm sure that for $40, I could expect to get more than a year of usage. Thank you all.

For a start, bestbuy have it wrong, the one's you had weren't earbuds, they're closer to iem's. Earbuds come as standard with an ipod. I'm not familiar with the phones you've been using but I can guess how they sound. Anyway, there are a myriad of iems which should suit you. Decide how much you want to spend and give this thread a read. http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/478568/multi-iem-review-140-iems-compared-meelectronics-cc51-sp51-added-02-03 Also if a $40 earphone lasted indefinately how would manufacturer's make a profit? Call me a cynic but you have to spend a lot more than $40 to get earphones that come with a warranty longer than 1 year.
