New Comcast 250GB/mo Bandwidth Limit

Sep 15, 2008 at 6:01 PM Post #17 of 40
^ I think it depends on where you're located. You should check online:

http://www.comcast.com/Shop/Buyflow/...opHSI&lpos=Nav

I'm paying about $50 which includes their "Blast" service. I have cable TV service so it drops it down by $10 a month. With "Blast" 2/16Mbps up/down is advertised but I'm actually getting 3.5/20Mbps. I'd stick with what you have there.

And this is from their faq:
Comcast Help & Support

Sounds like 250GB is both combined up/download.

The biggest complaint I have with comcast setting a limit is they provide no way to check how much bandwidth you use. Its the same thing as having a cell phone with so many minutes but no way to tell how many minutes you used.

Oh i have no intention of switching. I don't trust comcast to deliver me light entertainment - why would i trust them with my internet connection?

But i do wonder if i can lean on my provider to try to be competitive with industry standards.

ihate.

They always had limits but never published them advertising "unlimited" BS.. At least it's clear now and 250GB is reasonable.

Them using hardware for deep packet inspection so they can be selective about it is complete BS though.

Get ready... this is just phase 1 of trying to cut down on torrents/file-sharing. Other companies will follow and when they do they'll start to lock down more in other ways casually stepping around the laws.

Utopianet is fraking awesome.

My only fears are that comcast and qwest will succeed in encouraging the state government to delay further buildout until such time as someone starts complaining about how much it costs for how few people have it. Because there's no economy of scale, because the scale is limited. I'm just lucky to live in Phase One territory.

Or that some fundie will push for mandatory bowdlerization.

The way it's set up, the physical network is strictly infrastructure to allow an ISP to talk to a customer. The network doesn't have the ability to filter content - all they do is switch MPLS tags to deliver data to and from.

But they do require that the ISP meters the bandwidth. If i hit 125gb in any floating 30 day period, it costs me $10, iirc.

It's never happened because there just isn't that much I'm trying to download. But I've been up around 90 gigs a couple times.

Oh noes! 250gb a month? HOW CAN YOU NOT USE OVER 250GB A MONTH!

... It sure makes my 10gb a month limit look bad.

Only 2mbps down and up too. For $50 a month.

Quit your complaining.

What the heck are you talking about? What kind of provider has a limitation like that? You need to switch if that's what you're really dealing with. You can't even use the internet for a month with only 10 gigs of bandwidth.

We have a right to. I'm aware that other countries have even stricter limitation and pricing, but that's not our fault. We pay for near-unlimited use, and that's what we should be getting.

You are extremely lucky. To have the option for 50Mbps symmetrical for $60 a month is just about unheard of in the US. It's sad that when I got the "blast" upgrade from 768kbp to 3Mbps up, I was a little happy. Such low expectations.. meh.

I would drop my VPS and serve from my closet in a heart-beat.

I hate limits but I hate time warner even more. $100 a month (includes the cheapest TV service offered but NO landline) for 15 down (which is fine) but a stinking 750kb/s up. What is that in this day and age?

I did the math and 100 kb/s puts one over 250GB/mo.

How can I do torrents without all the wasted bandwidth?

As soon as you start downloading a torrent file you also simultaneously start uploading it to multiple people. Try your meter program on a regular http download from a website.
