I'm really new to this whole idea of good sounding music. About 6 months, I bought a pair of Sennheiser eH150's to try to get my iPod to sound better than it did with $10 earbuds and while they succeeded, I am now looking to see if I can get it to be any better.

My question is this:
Would I be better served to buy a headphone amp or use that money to buy a better set of cans? Which would improve the sound from my iPod the most?

Thanks a lot

That's a tough question. I would say an amp only because a good amp can be used for more than one pair of headphones - if you get another pair later, they can use the same amp (you definitely should upgrade from those headphones eventually) If you go for an amp, check out the Ray Samuels Tomahawk.

Headphones will yield the biggest gain in SQ for you. If you let us know what you listen to we can give some recs. I assume that you use your iPod on the move alot, so one criteria would be that the cans should be closed.

I'd agree with the headphones first. Regardless of your source, a better pair of headphones will almost always give you better sound than putting an amp between the source and your current 'phones. Regardless of how well an amp cleans up the signal (if it even does) it's still going through the same end product.

yup, headphones first...but be careful what you chose as some are more needy for an additional amp than others. You might want to think about how long you'd be going b/f you picked up an amp if you were going with full-size phones. IEMs usually don't need an amp at all.

I think you can buy both with this budget like AMB Mini3 AMPs or Nuforce iCon Mobile AMPs and JVC FX500 or Denon AH-C710. Dock cable for ipod is very important too and Cryo cable give you full bodied sound(is it ipod classic or others?).

Both of headphone and amp CAN be first. For there is a amp/dap/ hifi earphone package for your selection. That is AMP3 with the price only $149 for the 3 main functions.

Please have a look at the comments.
