New Beyerdynamic Pro X line: DT 700 Pro X and DT 900 Pro X

Haha, this is such a hard decision now. The place I ordered the Pro 700 X from won't let me try them out if I want to return them. The box has to be unopened.

The 700 Pro X I can get for about 250 € and the 1770s for 430 €

My usage will be music listening (mostly rock/metal but other genres as well), gaming and work. I work as a motion designer and do some editing/mixing as well from time to time. My amp/dac is a JDS Element II. I just don't know which pair to choose. I do want closed back since I already own a pair of HD6xx and I need good passive isolation since my computer fans are quite loud.

Would the extra 200 € be worth it in my scenario? I can't afford both :frowning2:

Meta-question: you’re within EU and ordering from a regular webshop? If so, they have to accept it back even when opened as long as it’s in mint condition and complete (original packaging, all accessories etc)

Personally I‘d go with the DT700 regardless, but that’s a decision only your ears can make for you of course…

DT 770,700x and 1770, they are all good.
But 700x = more mellow highs

Considering selling mine sr80e and sr225e. And buy 900x instead.
Don’t need all these Grados.

That I can fully understand
While the general satisfaction of Grado users with their headphones is intriguing I never found one that had at least acceptable comfort. The sound signature doesn’t work for me anyway… so comfort is not actually a problem for me.

While I acclaim the 1770 as great metal headphones, I use the 700PRO X and 900PRO X mainly because I don't listen to metal music exclusively. The 1770's powerful sound and its weight cause slight fatigue after long periods of use.
The 700/900PRO X have excellent tonal balance for broad genre of music, even for gaming, and comfort is hard to beat.

Oh man... if all headphone companies in the world could just make their cables like the ones that come with the DT900 ProX there would be no more talks about irritating cables. (I am looking at you Grado!) Very flexible, they do not tangle, they are thin and light.

Regarding DT1770 Pro vs. DT900 Pro X - I feel like it is difficult to compare them. The DT900 are obviously more open and with a bigger soundstage and more open sounding. I do feel like the treble can be somewhat fatiguing on some recordings. So, definitely more treble energy in DT900 than DT1770. Can you compare a closed design with an open design in terms of sound? I a not sure it is fair but if DT700 Pro X sounds anything like DT900 Pro X then they are VERY much worth trying. I have enjoyed the DT1770 for years but there is some extra fun (I didn't expect that from a "studio" headphone) with DT900. They are really dynamic and punchy. Almost crispy with a nice open treble presence.

Thank you very much for your impressions. How do you compare the hole of the pads of the Dt 900 with the 1770s (I suppose the 1770s pads will be the same as my 1990s).

The pads of the T 1.3 pinched my ear lobes and I think the new pads for the DT 700 and 900 are of the same size from what I've read in this thread.

That is correct. The space inside is a bit smaller in DT900 than DT1770. I am not sure if it is the exact same size as T1.3 though.

The cross section is different as far as I know: the new pads of the DT700/900 have straight lines while the old DT pads and the T1/5 pads were more rounded. I think I posted photos comparing the DT770 to the DT700 pads somewhere in this thread

Did this become anyone else's new favorite pair of headphones? If so, which headphone(s) in your collection did it replace? What is the dac/amp you're pairing it with?

For me, it replaced my Fidelio X2's. I'm powering my current headphones with the Monolith THX 788 DAC/AMP.

It may have made me sell a pair of Verite Closed... I came to the realisation that diminishing returns hits hard in this hobby, and I figured the money could be better spent elsewhere :p
Absolutely. The DT700 is an excellent example of this, its really good sounding, well built and doesn't cost that much.

I came to that same conclusion some time ago. Sold my Stellia, SR-007, HP-Diamond and counted myself extremely lucky that both the Ether CX and HE6se give me the same (if not even better) experiences! To top it off I prefer the Elear over Clear. Guess I like it "cheap".

I'm rethinking the DT 700 pro x. I loved it's sound sig but had some comfort issues. Perhaps I should have given it some more time.
