New Audio PC Build. Help!

Dec 8, 2005 at 4:19 PM Post #32 of 38
You could use an old PC with every hard drive you own and make it a NAS using linux and NFS. Then you could use a laptop on your end for music listening. I'm going to set up my old laptop to interface with my NAS and output the sound from a headroom microDAC. Obviously this setup wouldn't be too good if you are a heavy gamer but it's a solution none the less.

totally, dude... i am sure you could. i think that the mona setup i am doing will better it no mods, no nothin. and that is not even built for dedicated playback. on the DAW of vincent's (not the revelation, thing, that is a new product) that i have heard extensively though, which is very good - it does use a LYNX 2... kinda hard to replicate without something equal or better...

one of the reasons that terry and i like computer as source playback is that there is not (as much) tone quality b.s. from the source. it makes it far far easier to isolate and tune components in a speaker. so besting the vrs systems for me is not the goal. i just want something that is pretty faithful to the recording, where i think that even the very best 1x cd players simply never get it right (and i have heard a whole lot o cd players).

well, i still need to make you some cables. well get together some time before we leave. see ya.

With the processor the Thermaltake XP-120 heatsink

LOL, You are not going to have a "Micro" PC with that ginormous cooler.

You do not need serious horsepower for an Audio only PC, so there really isn't any need for anything faster than an Epia computer.

You might want to consider a multiple computer setup. Build a minimal "client PC" where you have the sound card in, along with a quiet 2.5" laptop drive, and passively cooled components. Then have a "Media Server" where all of your storage is, and tuck it away in another room/closet. Lots of HDD's = lots of noise. Then network them together.

But if Size isn't an issue, than a dead quiet high performance computer is entirely possible. I have built a Home Theater PC that is one of THE quietest computers I have, and the highest performance. But it ain't cheap.
You'll have to do some creative ducting and wiring as well.

I know the XP-120 will fit. With a fan its the same size as the Zalman one (the good quet one recommended by SPCR) and I've seen that one fit in the Silverstone case. So HA!!

As for the heatsink case...it just so happens that per some local natural disaster I'm collecting money...

O RLY?

Nice.

Well, then, go check out Atech Fabrication. Forget the XP-120, there are heatpipe systems there.

C'mon! We gotsta live vicariously through you. Get the Heatsync case.

I am late to the thread I know but let me say I think you should go with an AMD chip. They are cheaper and faster. If you ever decide you want to game, then the A64 smokes in games, and most other applications. Also if you want to try 64 bit, then you can

I have been AMD only since 1999 and help my friends build systems all the time.
