googleli is right - as painfully expensive as some of the top DAC's are, they do have better performance than midrange DAC's.  I tried a system with a K-01, and even the single - ended output destroyed my AudioGD unit.  Given this I don't think it's worth my while buying LCD-3 until I build B22 and get a better DAC.

A mediocre DAC still shouldn't prevent you from experiencing the extra smoothness, linearity, and slight speed increase of the LCD3 though...

But I do agree that once you get a hold of a good DAC, it's hard to go back.

Without using percentages I think an overall balanced approach is what I believe gives the best results. I wouldn't pair a $2000 DAC with a $100 amp as a general rule of thumb. For example, a high quality $1500 DAC with a well matched $1500 amp and a synergistic $1500 headphone that all work together seems to be a great way to put together a system. that's my view.

I agree. But which component will one upgrade from here? I will upgrade the source, then amp instead of buying a new headphone. And to be frank, 1500 dollar headphone is pretty much high end, and can go a long way and still not to be the bottle neck.

I remember I was heavily confronted when I said in the LCD-2 thread that the Rev 1 did not have good bass extension and had a general lack in sub-bass. I was pointed to the LCD-2 graph again and again. I felt my SR009 or even my custom IEMs had much better sub-bass than the LCD2, although LCD2's mid bass has more weight. What I got was denial, and they point me to the graph again. Things like "we can't hear anything below 20Hz".

Every one of those people should now listen to the LCD-3 now and be honest to himself. The LCD-2 is great in upper-bass / low-mids and has good weight in that area, but lower bass extension just isn't there compared with ES5, UE18 Pro, SR009 and LCD-3.

Funny you should mention that. I have measurements of two LCD2s. One has better bass extension than the other. The difference is shockingly significant.
