I don't know how to help you other than suggest that you try different versions of ALSA. I've tried tens of versions myself and am happiest w/ the latest 1.0.14.

Does flashing to prodigy firmware enable ac3 and dts passthrough in ubuntu without as much asound.state and asound.conf editing? What other benefits does the firmware change give under linux?

I have no idea what you are talking about. All I can tell is that the card outputs 44.1 KHz to my DAC and works fine with no asound.conf (I don't have one in the /etc folder).
