If the debate is so clearly over, why does the iPod classic use a hard drive?

Seriously?

How about cost? HDD tech is still considerably cheaper than flash tech. It would cost several thousand dollars to equip an iPod with 60-80 GB memory at todays prices. Its coming down, though. In a few years, if Apple even makes a disk based iPod, it'll probably be called the "Retro".

the small flash capacity is the least of its worries...

it does some things well - nice screen, wi-fi, safari, good interface...but it does a lot of things only half-***** and the features they left out make it all the more puzzling. the problem with this device is that it ISN'T the iphone minus the phone. it's the iphone minus a lot of what makes the iphone useful - like an email client, notes app, bluetooth, etc. so you're left with listening to music, watching movies, and surfing the web...and wishing you could do a bunch of other things but not having the apps or functionality to do it.

this deeply troubles me...i know it's an ipod and NOT a phone, but it just reminds me of verizon, who cripples all their hardware...apple is starting to cripple all their hardware and that's not a good thing. i love apple products, but this just isn't the direction they should be going...

I have a feeling that most of the more positive reviews of the touch won't be coming out of the states. Seeing as they have already been spoiled with the iphone. But think about it, if the iphone never came out, this thing would probably be getting 95-99s across the board even with screen issues. That is why the ipod touch is appealing to many people outside the United states, because they(including myself) have yet to experience the technology. Which is why globally it will still be a success.

Each cassette was as big as an iPod, can you imagine that? Also, no easy track skip, album skip or shuffle for us.

I remember thinking Auto reverse was the best idea Ever!!!

oh man thats old school..

My living-room tape player had (well, it still has, I think) a "next track" feature, it would fast forward the tape looking for some moments of silence and them it would continue playing normally, no shuffle though. Inovative heh?

I wonder what people will think when they look back at threads like this ten years from now. Im sure that ina few years in Japan you will be able to stream music in real time over their fiftieth generation wireless network. All you will need is a few gigs of flash.

You would think that PC Magazine would be the most critical of the bunch-- evidently they had one of the iPod touches with the functional screen. Anyone care to guess how long it'll be before they add storage space to the current iPod touch?

What a waste of a great idea IMO. My 80gb iPod is full up with movies and shows and of course audio/podcasts. But I have to work to get it below 80gb. To release what the claim to be a great video watching tool - but then max out at 16gb is just absurd.

It looks like a great idea to me. I would love to upgrade mine although it seems a waste of money to get the 160gb classic (which is great btw) when I know that Apple is already working on bigger versions of the Touch and probably phasing out the "classic"

13 months. Thats the lifetime of an apple product. One month after teh standard warranty runs out they come out with something new. One month after that your 14month old ipod is broken.

Tell that to the 2.5 year old iPod mini I own, the 2.5 year old iPod mini my girlfriend owns, her 7 year old iBook, and her sister's 2 year old iBook.
