there are also many different sounding hd650s out there. I myself have heard three different sounding 650s.

Probably Sennheiser answer to the Q-701, and the K712.

  Just subscribing... How exciting!

Unfortunately the last 7 pages have been lacking in new information and a bunch of idle chat.

This is inevitable. At least it isn't as bad as the HD-800 thread got....yet anyway -- "Sennheiser ripped off Sony's design!" + a dozen pages arguing about materials and it should be metal for the price and etc. Since that isn't an issue with AKGs I will just await the pain of the first K812 vs. HD800 thread.

But tdockweiler calls HD650 brighter than K702 65th anniversary which I find impossible... Even LCD-2 rev2 are bright and pacy headphones in comparison to veiled and slow HD650!

That's the more maddening thing about reviews too: Since we know for a fact that all headphones drivers are not consistent (except Stax) for all we know a reviewer could have got a good pair or a dud.

My HD-650 seems to be off the usual consensus. I did hear all these veiled/slow HD-650's in the past and could never live with them. Most of my posts in the old HD-650 thread were complaints! I had two of them back in 2010-2011 and switched amps twice without any luck. Large mid-bass hump and too dark/muffled. I even got new pads for this pair to make sure compressed pads were not the cause. This one actually has very good low bass presence and more than the HD-580 and 600 I had. Annie still had a bit more though. BTW this HD-650 doesn't seem to have recessed sounding upper mids at all. No large mid-bass hump and pretty neutral except for some slight treble roll-off. This will shock people, but when I want to hear gear changes I use my HD-650 and DJ100.

Q701 isn't good enough.

The Annie DOES seem darker/congested than this HD-650. This HD-650 seems more open and spacious sounding and even more clear. This is with a transparent setup too.
It's like the Annie I heard had zero airiness AT ALL. The HD-650 actually has some with a good source and especially my thrift store Denon 1920. It's not dark at all but pretty close. My Q701 has just only a little more treble.

Modded Q701 makes the HD-650 pointless to use now but it's not going anywhere. I love both of them.

To make things sound even more weird, I once preferred the 598 to the HD-600/650 EASILY. Another time I liked the HD-600 over the veiled HD-650s I heard two years ago. Not a fan of the HD-600 at all, but it's not bad. I actually prefer the HD-580 (grill causes some changes)

Well, I like HD598 a lot and prefer them over HD650 easily... On the other hand, since HD600 are technically better but worse FR-wise (for me), it would be a very interesting fight between these two :)

Thanks for clarification on the HD650s :) I am now evaluating K712 Pro, will post impressions in K712 pro thread if interested :)

I love both the 598 and HD-650. 598 will stay here until it dies. It's hard for me to compare the two. The 598 does have a larger soundstage and is better for some music. It's a very fun headphone.

I hope to get to try the K712 Pro within the next couple of weeks. I'm really looking forward to it! Not sure if i'd like it since I disliked the Annie so much. I hope I'm totally wrong.

AKG is sending me a K812 to try also.

Actually, no, I made that up. K812 is off my radar until I win the lottery.

LOL BTW my HD-600 actually had more of a mid-bass hump than the HD-650

D: what is it that you do not like about the Annie's? I have mine on reserved...

Well, let's just say that I prefer the Q701 sound. Some people will just prefer the K702, Q701 or Annie.
It was a bit too forward in the low mids for me and seemed a little dark. I love the treble of my Q701. It's low mids are perfect and not too forward.
I may be a semi-treble head, but I don't like the treble of the 325is or DT-990.
I'd never sacrifice more bass for less treble.

Sounds nuts, but I think I don't like the Annie because of what the pads do for the sound. I want angled memory foam pads

The Annie pads give me a similar sound as the K601 pads but with more bass. Weird, I know. I think this is one reason why the K601 sounds darker/warmer than the K702.

Q701 angled memory foam pads might be amazing. Not even sure how AKG could do that and would probably cost too much to make.

I want a Q701 PRO

Or should that be Q712 Pro?

When I am looking at photo of K812 at AKG webpage (http://www.akg.com/Home-793.html), pads seems to be a little bit angled. Is it true?
Also they looks quite nice with those "rings" around drivers.

Really dumb question, but any idea when  these might be released and is there a MSRP yet?

No headphone is worth that much...

Something is worth what people are willing to pay, so saying that is sort of arbitrary.

I agree though, I couldn't justify spending £1000 outright on headphones.

If i buy a flagship,ill buy used.

However, some people could.

and would.
