Neko Case & Her Boyfriends

Neko Case is amazing. I urge anyone remotely interested to get her latest album, Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. It's awesome, among the best of 2006.

Happy listening!

Agree, 100%. I'm a huge Neko fan.

Ditto on all the comments. Neko is fantastic. I would be hard-pressed to pick which is better - Fox Confessor or Blacklisted - they're both great.

Ditto on the New Pornographers and Twin Cinema, too - fantastic album. The fact that Neko can alternate between alt-indie-country and alt-indie-rock is great. However, I also agree with all the comments about the sound quality on all of these CD's: yuck. Blacklisted may be the best of the bunch because of its very, very deep bass - among the deepest I've heard - but then the rest of the CD almost sounds clipped/distorted in parts.

Oh well - guess you can't have everything.

EDIT: Gah! Didn't see your post - we sure think alike, Nate!

I just got the CD last week, and I really like the music.

I didn't think it sounded too good, it was very thin and vocals had a lot of sibilance on the vocals.
Did your copy sound this way? ANTI 86777-2

Mine didn't sound terribly thin IMO, but the vocals were definitely very sibilant. It catches my attention every so often, but you've gotta forgive it when you have such great music

Jude, "Neko Case and her boyfriends" was an old project: they produced two albums, one in 1997 and one in 2000.
Her last album, "Fox confessor", is indeed very good, as is supposed to be her first one: "Blacklisted".

The "New Pornographers" are IMO probably the best pop rock band of this decade and they are absolutely stunning live. Unfortunately the quality of their first CD, "Mass romantic", is appalling beyond words, I mean it should be used as a text book in school for recording engineers. Too bad because otherwise the album would be a classic, as it is is just unlistenable

I don't know if you are aware of this, but Mass Romantic was remastered in 2003.

Thanks Borat, I did not know. I just check it out and yes there is a second issue released in 2003 and apparently remastered. Hmmm rather strange to see an album remastered so quickly, normally it take at least ten years.
I am not sure which version I have, probably the second one. Still remastered does not necessary means better than the original, it would not be the first case of a bad remaster.

BTW, do you own the CD? What do you think of the sound quality? and, of course, which version do you have? Anyone's input about it would be appreciated as I really like the CD and would like to hear it properly

The New Pornographers is an indie rock group... what do you expect, sound-quality wise? all indie is hopelessly lo-fi.

i love 'em though. Neko Case is an amazing vocalist... a bit too countryish for me, but that's ok. as long as it's not full-on Josh Turner i'm fine!

not only that but i saw a craigslist posting and missed out on her canadian amp album on vinyl. but yeah she's an awesome singer, I've heard things about her concerts being a very personal, warm and close environment.

Sorry, don't really agree with this one.
Guillemot debut album, My Morning Jacket "Z", most Wilco's ones are examples of excellent production. A lot of indies CDs, even of band known as lo-fi, are decently produced.
IMO opinion the really big stinkers in term of sound quality are "Mass romantic", " The soft bulletin" and "Thunder, lighting, strike" by the Go team. I really mean these three scare my cat away from the sitting room.
