Also I take it
amped dt's > amped M50?
unamped M50 > unamped DT's

I can't say the amped DT's are better since I haven't run mine through an amp yet to compare. Plus my M50's aren't burned in yet. My friend's DT's are. All I can say for sure is that unamped, the M50's sounded better.

arent those the 80 ohm version? which ARE the ones im considering.

I thought that the 'Pro' version is 250 Ohm and the non-pro is 80 Ohm. However I may be wrong. I'll have to go check!

I have a pair of "DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm". I'm not sure what year they are from, though.

I think you can custom order a 32 Ohm version from the Beyer website.

I have the DT770 pro 80, not the 2005, the previous ones like you get on ebay for 100$; a coworker has the M50. Without amp, the DT770 sound like crap: you get bass but nothing else. With any kind of amp, including the fiio, which I use at work, they sound great. They are a bit bass heavy but the they whole range is there; it's possible that the M50 has slightly better mids. For comfort, DT770 wins without hesitation. For built quality, DT770 is a lot sturdier and it's almost impossible to break them. For isolation, DT770 is a lot better: you only need a very low volume lounge playing and you're all alone in your own little bubble while people are yelling at each other just a few cubes away; you won't even get close to that with the M50. For portability, M50 wins. My coworker brings his M50 from home everyday, I simply can't do the same with the DT770 since putting them in my backpack consumes all the usable storage space.

There you have it, both pair sound great but one is only good is you use them at a single location. If you need to move around, get the M50, otherwise, you will never regret the DT770. Don't over analyze that purchase, you can always try something new by visiting the sales/trade forum. Just get a good pair and enjoy yourself.

Yamaha rh5ma. $40 new. Great bass, great mids. If you are a nut for highs you may not like them but I find them just fine. No fatigue. Not as comfy as d1001 for all day use though. Just fine for a few hours (for me). Prefer the sound over d1001 and ES7 and wayyyy over dt770 pro (yuck).

With an amp, the 770's DESTROY the M-50's!
Without, the M-50s are a better choice...
Overall, I recommend you get an amp and get the 770 pro 80 ohm edition...

Just a question, since I'm strongly leaning towards the ATH-M50, is it better to have a coiled cable or straight cable? I'll be doing most of my listening at a desk while working, so it's important that the cord not get in the way, but I'd also like to haul 'em around for the occasional portable listening session.

i got the straight cable. if you are going to be tracking with them, straight will be better as you can move around with out pulling the coil. if you are going to be at the desk or within a few feet of the source most of the time, then coiled might be a better choice for you.

i got my M50s off ebay for like $104 shipped (tax added because it was in-state). just search there and try the best offer - they should accept $5-$10 off the price.
not sure on the others...
