There is a saying that a groups is as good as it's lowest common denominator. It is true with audio. Also an other thing is that small thing realy realy matter. Sometime Even more than the big thing. Small thing has the potential to make or brake the sound. If your dragging some little nagging weakness from anywhere in the systems your not gonna be able to enjoy the systems for any prolongued periode of time. That why proper equilibrium and synergy is important. You might not notice it at first if your not used to it but little thing from any of the element of the chain is what make night and day change.
Of course big headphone matters but if your dragging weakness introduce by most obviously source and amplification but also cable, power, interconnect, vibration, mastering of the origin CD, too little voltage, impedence mismatch or anything for that matter if all those thing doesn't work together even the best headphone in the world won't make it more enjoyable in the long run it will make you stop lisenting because your are more aware of all the weakness
I believe that source is a very important because it will set all the thing right or wrong from the start. Amp will make your phone work as they should and finaly the phone will only make the final flavor but it cannot correct anything wrong at the start of the line.
