Need advice on a good 'entry level' 2.1 system for under £500 (~$800)

Is there a craigslist out there? Id have a look around for used gear, usually can find some great deals.  I'd agree with them on getting an integrated amp.  Also floorstanders, make sure to properly pay attention to the positioning of the speaker, the equilateral triangle is the optimal set up.

If you find a good set-up on craigslist for less than $800 you generally want to spend the rest on acoustics.  Look for 5 1/2 inches thick Roxul, it works well and is cheap per square foot.  http://lifehacker.com/5856799/

Done a bit of looking around - What about, seeing as I need everything, something like a set of Tannoy Mercury V4's?
Are they any good? Because if I got something like them then I could get a Marantz CD6004 and PM6004 combo.
Just wanted to know your opinion on them

I have the PM 5004 combo which I think is very nice.
The PM 6004 just recently came out and costs a bit more
You said your budget was £500 the Marantz 6004 combo is already that or more.

You'll likely need to expand your budget just a bit more to get everything.
For bookselfs you'll have to buy a stands for them stands don't cost that much.

Or you could go floorstanders aka tower speakers. Which really have big sound, more detail/refinement and bass on them.
And you won't need to get stands then but towers really need room space to shine.
Bookselfs have much higher quality bass than any headphones have so you might not ever feel the need for a sub if go with bookselfs.

I don't really know what the speaker market is like in England but I would assume it's likely easiest and possibly best to go with one of the many UK speaker companies.
Don't really know much about the Tannoy a quick search says they are supposedly good.

A quick search of UK online stores here are a few speakers/companies to possibly consider

An example of price difference between bookself and towers.

It's probably best to go to a speaker hifi store and test out a few.
