Hey guys

so I first bought one of these(http://www.ebay.com/itm/320659633166?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1010wt_1165) thinking the 12au7 pin layout was the same as the 6cg7 layout but its not.  6cg7 has a 9AJ base while the 12au7 is a 9A base. The difference is heater wire to pin 4+5 and 9 on the 12au7. I can connect 5 and 4 with two going to pin 4 and connect 9 to pin 5.

so I have one of these and was thinking why not just turn it into a 12au7 to 6cg7 adapter? I found this one ebay as one but its way to expensive

I already have one of these that is easy to take apart:

Im a little confused on how to change it to work. I have a 6sn7 to 12au7 adapter. I need to change 12au7 to 6cg7 where the 6cg7 will go into my amp. to go from 12au7 to 6gf7 I need to run pin 5 to pin 4 (two on pin 4 then) and pin 9 to pin 5 to be able to have the correct heating. How can I do this with my adapter? Seems easy question im just over thinking it. The tube saver has the 9 pin female parts little nubs to connect to sodierd to rods that just go through the piece. Im thinking im going to need some wires?

thanks for your help!!!!

Badd99 & I have had PMs about this.  I'm a bit confused as to exactly what tube he's trying to use in his CTH but I think its a 6SN7.
If this is true I'll get this out of the way; you're in the advanced/on-your-own area of CTH tube use (see CTH tube info in my sig).  Bad things can happen to a CTH if pins are not mapped correctly.  Not sure Badd99 has a DMM handy but its a prerequisite for fooling with this stuff /verifying pin mapping ($5 ebay, $15 RadioShack?).

As far as 6CG7 vs 12AU7/6922 pinout they are compatible - search  "Cavalli Compact Tube Hybrid (CTH) Tube & Tweak thread" for 6CG7, where this query belongs, and you'll see folks have used 6CG7s in their CTHs

Regarding the heater pins, you simply need to know that CTH/12AU7 implements series heater using pins #4 & #5.  You disregard any shield or center-tap/midpoint heater connection to CTH's pin #9 a tube or adapter may have, as long the other 8 pins map correctly.  The CTH makes no connection on pin #9.
IOW you should not be connecting multiple adapter wires to the heater pins in the adapter.

>  I have a 6sn7 to 12au7 adapter

If that adapter maps correctly then it would adapt your 6sn7 to 12au7 & it may make the 6sn7 work in your CTH.  I say may because the operating characteristics of such far-off-from-CTH-target-tubes may cause issues (such as temperamental CTH e12 latch like I experienced w/some 6F8Gs).  E.g. if you've assured proper adapter mapping for the 6sn7, but CTH's e12 does not go green or cycles, then you out of luck (unless you desensitize CTH's e12 even more, another topic entirely & covered in CTH threads).

BTW I pointed him to http://www.bustedgear.com/res_Tube_pinouts.pdf

If you can point 6sn7 to 12au7 and 12au7 to 6cg7, I see no way this shouldn't work. I use a 6cg7 on my cth for years so I am very sure it works. Since my adapter is 6sn7 to 12au7, all I need to do is point 12au7 to 6cg7. I need to run pin from 5 to pin 4 on the 12au7 and pin 9 to pin 5 for it to be the same base as the 6cg7. Im just a little stuck on how I might be able to do it without that 12au7 to 6cg7 adapter linked above. If I did have one of those, it should indeed work.

In the tweak thread you listed, Sachu has said about using the 6sn7 tube with the CTH "just need to get a 6SN7 to 6CG7 adapter. or make one yourself." Since mine is 6sn7 to 12au7, I really just see a 12au7 to 6cg7 as the fix here?

Also, I do have a multimeter.

But remember, 6sn7 n 6cg7 have 6volt on their heater and 12au7 need 12volt  for their heater,  try to read the tube spec/datasheet and then you can configure how to replace them

12au7 has a split heater. It can be configured for either 6 or 12v operation.

And you set CTH's heater switch to its 6.3V position for 6.3V series heated tubes, 12.6V position for 12.6V series heated tubes.  And Badd99 knows this.

IOW for CTH purposes, disregard any parallel/split/mid/center-tap/other-ways-to-say-not-the-full-heater-filament heater attributes.
Any associated parallel/split/mid/center-tap heater pin gets mapped to CTH's socket pin #9 (or gets no connection to the socket, again "CTH tube info" in my sig).

Okay well what are your thoughts on this then, I can get one cheaper from him:

If he does 12au7 to 6cg7 he had to map the wires right and the voltage. I dont see how he couldn't have because that is what this adapter is.

Also, even though its a 12au7 and usually 12v, that doesn't mean you cant run the 6.3v to it. Since the 6sn7 that is being used is only 6.3v the fact that the 12au7 is 12v shouldn't matter since the 12au7 is in between two conversions that are 6.3v (the 6cg7 end into the amp and the 6sn7 female end.)
