Need A Complete System...with only $300
Apr 3, 2006 at 9:05 PM Post #16 of 22
Sorry to ressurrect an old thread, but I've decided on one of two setups:

1) HD-595 (50 Ohm version)-$190-210, if prices don't increase
2) HD-580 -> PA2V2 or good CMOY-$210-235 (Is an Airhead worth a ~$100 price increase?)
*Sorry to the Grado fans, but I just don't listen to that much rock.

It's heresy, but I don't see myself coming in with good enough cash or ears to further this hobby (my parents are skeptical enough about my...new spending habits--had to promise them this would be the last setup for a long while and that I would try to save money), and I'll have enough time finding better-encoded MP3's/CD's to realize the quality of these headphones. With that in mind, which one is the more balanced and forgiving of a setup? And how would you describe the jump in sound quality compared to, say, iBuds to Shure E2C's or Shures to HD 497's?

I guess PIMETA>>HD580 is a good choice for under $300.

For $300 I'd be real tempted to stalk the for sale forum here.

I've seen the Millet Hybrid go for $200. Paired with HD580s for $100-120. I don't know if it can be beat. I don't care for the PIMETA with 580s.

That was before I tried the 580 with buffered amp circuits running at higher voltages.

Senn HD595 $155 http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=172434

KOSS KSC75 for portable $11.95-24,95 at www.amazon.com or radioShack or at Circuit City

Shellbrooklab.com get a Shellbrook Minihead $99 or the signature a bit more,,like $125 or $15 or so.

There are also other amps out there under $100

Use that with your IPOD.

Ya might even have some money left for a case for it all

i'd say spend the $300 on headphones and pick up a vintage receiver by pioneer, sherwood, sansui, nikko, marantz for free
