is the isolation well enough to be used in a library?
I've also heard good things about the audio technica es7 and sennheiser hd25
Which of the four would you say the best is?
and btw, I like rock and upbeat music

I thought the Sennheiser HD25s don't go for less than $100? I don't listen to rock so I can't comment on the RP-21s with rock. Upbeat music? Can you name some artists/songs that would be an example?

also, the rp-21 seems too flamboyant to be used in public
I actually prefer to subtle look of hd280

and finally, would IEMs provide better sound quality than headphones when at the same price?

Take a look at the Denon D1000. I have tried the HD25 and AKG K81DJ and I think the Denon are more musical. You can get them for about $120.

The RP21s sound great but are not great portable phones and would probably leak just a tad too much for library use depending on how loudly you listen. I've heard the Denons are not great isolating cans either but that they don't leak too much sound out and are probably a little better SQ-wise than the RP21. I thought I saw another recent post where the HD25s were going for $99 somewhere - sorry I don't remember the details.

i agree with you on the music side musicman59 but i'm not sure that the isolation is that ..........effective. when i put mine on, the wife always tels me to turn it down. i wouldn't mind but she says that from upstairs

my money would be on the HD25's but it also about where you have the volome control. yes, some headphones leak like a sieve, but you need to watch the volume control.

I agree the D1000s sound extremely nice at that price point but they don't isolate at all. This is why I returned them. I havent listened to the HD25s but they are on my shortlist. Did you heard the HD25s with stock or an aftermarket cable ?

The Denons are perfect for a library. There is no sound for them to let in and they let almost no sound out. They also sound fantastic for the money. They are $100 at J&R.

However, I found that they did not provide enough isolation for use on NYC subways. (I have ER4s for that

They're $100 at JR/Amazon.

AKG k271 vs denon d-1000?
Is AKG noticeably or substantially better than d-1000?
Which is more "fun" and has better insolation and comfort?
I know that the AKG is huge and requires an amp, but my bag is usually empty anyways
