Try Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica. Completely batty album. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs is also pretty strange and interesting to listen to.

$.02 on Beefheart, since this is the 2nd mention of Trout Mask…if I was trying to get someone into him I'd start with one of his last three records:

Bat Chain Puller (Shiny Beast)

Doc at the Radar Station

Ice Cream for Crow

One more band worth checking out:

Orchestra Baobab - rockin' rumba from Senegal

Depends on what exactly you mean by eclectic, but...

Animal Collective
City in Colour
Showbread
The Fratellis

That should be varied enough, I hope.

Here are a few of my eclectic faves. Most mainstream rock has been purged from my collection.

D.M. Stith: Heavy Ghost
This is my current fave. D.M. Stith manages to take the flamenco, black gospel, swing jazz, and classical music- then put them into a blender. He's very similar to Grizzly Bear, but with a heavier uptempo experimental edge. You can also Google his website and download a few songs from his Curtain Speech EP. Could almost say that it's a NY swing emulation of Lustmord.

Andrew Bird - any album since 2000
Grizzly Bear - any album
Doves: Kingdom of Rust (these guys should be more popular than Coldplay)
Black Keys: Attack and Release (like Steve Winwood singing real blues backed by Black Sabbath)

Frank Zappa hasn't been mentioned? Hmmm... no fooling?

At my house! they get lots of play. Can't remember last time I played a Coldplay album.

now for the more Coldplay than Coldplay angle, give a listen to Keane - Hopes and Fears...very good Brit Pop.

Wow, cheesiest album cover in the history of the world. Has to be interesting, however, if it involves Wooten.
