NAD Viso HP50 : Another superb headphone from Paul Barton?
Feb 11, 2015 at 8:13 PM Post #1,606 of 3,345
Co-worker just loaned me his pair of HP50's, so I thought I'd toss in my 2 cents.

These are nice portable's with slightly boosted bass and a warm sound.  Decent comfort.  Build quality looks like they could be a bit fragile (creaking plastic), but I suppose only time will tell on that issue.

I could see recommending these to people if they needed a portable to run from their smartphone or tablet that also isolates well.

For something comparatively priced I feel an open phone like the HD600 is a better option for a home setup where you don't need isolation.  Looked through a few previous reviews to see what people thought on these and this review basically parroted my thought exactly.

Many reviews saying this was a giant killer that punched way above its price, comparing it to some flagships.  I did not feel this played at the top tier level in comparison, but that's not really a knock on it.  It's a nice headphone.

Just ordered these along with a pair of Sennheiser HD600s. Any good cable options for the NADs? Would like something longer for home use.

I'm using this cable. Cheap, great quality and choice of length. It's braided with a nice brown/red underneath. Lovely cable.

If you want something end-game for the NADs it would be http://www.moon-audio.com/silver-dragon-cables/moon-audio-silver-dragon-v3-headphone-cable.html I'm going to get them for my NADs sometime this year.

Please do leave your impressions here!  I do like a quality cable but I'm skeptical about sound changes and would CERTAINLY need to chack my head about a decision to spend more on the cable than the price of the headphone.  That's next level logic!  No offence!

None taken, it's a no-brainer to hear the difference before you spend money IMO. For me personally, I've already spent more than 1K on cables for my hifi system (not head-fi) and I believe in cables so I surely will get my moon-audio cables because I love my NADs. I am afraid however, that it will be delayed quite a bit because the latest interest for me is custom-iems :frowning2: so it may take a while until I can provide any sort of an useful feedback. What I am also looking at is Paul Barton is coming up with another flagship headphone with PSB speakers, perhaps also with NAD soon afterwards.

Is that a fabric covering or plastic (Teckflex)?  I'm not a big fan of teckflex on headphone cables...seems to stiffen them up too much and create more microphonics.

It is plastic, but there is no issue at all with stiffness (IMO) or microphonics of any sort.  Given the price, I recommend you try it.  I couldn't be happier.

A very interesting interview with Paul Barton where he discusses Roomfeel and its relevance to the research and development behind the HP50.  Great stuff - very enlightening.

Hi matt, just looked at your inventory, snap! I've some QED Silver Anniversay cable too, using them for my BX2's.

RE: The ebay cable you recommended, have you compared it to similar designed silver plated ? I'm wondering if its worth the double the price.

Go QED!  Yeah, I've used them cables for years now.

I haven't tried the silver plated version.  If it did open up the treble a bit, it might be worth it but I'm skeptical about the difference cables make..

I have the NAD for about 9 months now and really like the overall sound quality. But i`ve been checking the t5p fort weeks now (reading reviews, t5p thread) which made me very curious if the t5p will give a small or big boost in sound quality. In short: is it worth it to go for the t5p or is the difference too small too justify the purchase(even 2nd hand)?

That makes 2 of us mate although I did grab a Forza Audio Works cable for my Denon D600's for convenience as the 3 meter cable supplied was too long and I did not want to use the IOS cable supplied.

My non IOS NAD HP50 Cable developed a fault the other day and when enquiring about a warranty replacement from Addicted 2 Audio here in Australia they kindly offered a V-Moda replacement cable for free. Thanks to George and his team at A2A. Awesome customer service.

The NAD cable is pretty flimsy and I'm not surprised it broke. Wonder how much it cost them to manufacture it. Not much I reckon.  Makes you wonder about the rest of the build quality. They still sound bloody good though!!
