What's the sound quality of this MD player llike compared to a HiFi seperate like the the old JA555es?

The Hi-MD portable player has the ability to record/play straight PCM, which is the best possible recorded format. However, the home deck probably has a better analog lineout stage & power supply. Not sure about the DAC's comparatively, as passthru devices though.

All I can tell you is I sold my imod and vcap dock after spending some time with my mz rh1 but I couldn't possible be able to compare against any home gear let alone that specific model...sorry

I have got a MZ-RH1.

Using headphones direct from the unit the sound is a bit muddy and lacking in detail

Via the line out into an earmax anniversary the sound is nearly as good as via the line out from the JA555es playing an ATRAC recorded disc
