My portable history starts back in the early 1970's when I had one of those portable rectangular mono cassette recorder/players (I wanna say it was Radio Shack but not sure on that) and would record things off the TV, radio, or maybe even from speakers on my record player via a microphone. I was only 9 or 10 years old at the time but probably how I got my start in music and eventually hifi audio. I remember pouring over catalogs with my dad in the 1976 - 1977 timeframe and he put together about 5 different systems over that time, buying and selling them to friends so he could try something different, etc.
Fast forward to my more modern foray into portable hifi and that was around 1983 while I was in college and ended up saving enough money to buy my first "nice" device - the Akai PM-R1. Still have it to this day! After college I got into car audio and lost interest in/did not use portable gear until around early 2001.
So here is my history from that point on:
