MY NEW AKG K612 Pro audiophile headphone impressions

Wow! Completely forgot about these.

Didn't know they already started selling them so I picked up a pair. I've used the excellent K601, K701, and Q701 in the past, so I'm eager to see how these compare. I've had my eye on the K702 65th and K712 for quite some time now but they are a bit out of my price range, so this if perfect. I'm mainly purchasing them for gaming, so I'm excited to hear how they compare to my old AD700 I've resorted to now. It'll be great to transition over to full sized again, as I've been using IEMs for quite some time. Love how they look!

The K 601 are among the most uncomfortable headphones I've used. Assuming as the majority do that the K 612 are the K 601 with new pads, I'd advise against buying the K 612 without trying them on first. At the very least make sure the store has a good return policy.

Totally different for me, one of the most comfortable headphones, very light with no clamp pressure on the head, yet good grip because of the large headband and cups.

This is why I bring it up - the majority seem to find them comfortable yet there are some number of people like me who find the opposite, thus they're not quite universally comfortable.

K400 has too much bass?

I'd never call my K400 a bass heavy headphone although its got more than my K240DF but significantly less than my T50RP and K550.  If anything bass is where the K400 falls short.  When listening to electronic music the low end bottoms out and displays more fatigue quicker than some of my other headphones.  The T50RP for instance has incredible slam even at higher volumes.  My hope for the K612 is that it will deliver more performance due to its use of more updated drivers but still keep the warm and natural signature of the K400.

I am surprised how flat the frequency response of the K601 is. It's probably the flattest I've seen:

^ Too bad it doesn't actually sound like that.
I actually think the HD-598 sounds flatter than the K601.

I do love the K601 though...

I really hope the K612 is better/different than the K601. I think I said that before, but I wouldn't mind having another K601.

Unlike the K601, the HD-598 sounds pretty close to that graph. I think the 598 and K601 are comparable in overall sound quality. I think the Q701 is a step above both though IMO.
If I had to pick between an HD-598 and a K601 it'd be really tough! Two of my favorites..

If the K601 is not-as-flat as the HD598, how so? I really liked the HD598 so this should serve as a good reference point for me.

This is what akg has told me on Facebook about the differences between the new k612 and the older k601 :

"The new K612 PRO has new capsules that have a wider frequency response and thus, the headphones sounds more open. ",
