Well, even if they don't improve significantly, at least some of the money went to a good cause - I can live with that. I briefly considered leaving them sealed (suspicions about sound and I know the nutty collector mentality very well) but I wanted to show them to my friend yesterday at lunch. Time will tell.
Mike stopped by at my place and bought along his HF-1 (mine isn't ship yet) yesterday. We ended up comparing the SR-225, SR-325, SR-200, and HF-1 and to my surprise, the HF-1 came out on top. At first I thought the HF-1 will be some where b/w the SR-225 and SR-325, but after quick listen to my SSR-325, I found the HF-1 to be a better phones than SR-225, and SR325. The HF-1 is a definitely a joy to listen to thanks to their deep and punchy bass, sweet midrange, and polite treble. Mike told me that his HF-1 only had 24 hrs of burn in, so I suspect that the bass can only get better. In my opinion, the HF-1 sounds very similar to the RS-2. For 200 dollars, the HF-1 is amazing.
How much better are they then say the sr80's and do they compare to the RS1's.
There is no comparison b/w the RS-1 and SR-80. The SR-80 is an entry level Grado, while the RS-1 is top of their reference line. The entry level can will only take you so far in audiophile territory, if you want the best Grado, the RS-1, RS-2, and PS-1 are your choice. To my ears, the HF-1 is remarably close the RS-2. The HF-1 is also a much better sounding headphones in comparison to my SR-325 (not SR-325i) and SR-225. If you can spend 200 dollars on a pair of headphones and prefer Grado sound, I highly recommended the HF-1. I still can't believe how goods the HF-1 sound out of my Maxed PPA and Sony SCD-555ES yesterday playing Grover Washington SACD. The only two current production Grado phones that I've yet to hear are the SR-60 and SR-325i.
I think what Purk means is that the SR325 'phones that he has are the original silver 325s rather than the newer gold 325i (i meaning improved) so the HF-1 might fare differently against the newer/sonically improved 325i.

In summary (hard to keep track with so many different threads) members Sean H, mulveling, and purk have all stated that the HF-1 is superior to the SR-225, while sounding similar, but not quite as good, as the Reference Series Two.
chesebert says the SR-325i is still superior to the HF-1, specifically in areas of bass, treble extension, soundstage, and separation.
en480c4 says the SR-325i surpasses the HF-1 in speed and detail. But those who complain about "thinness" in the 325i midrange might prefer the HF-1.

I did and I do!
While the 325i may be more technically proficient, the HF-1 strikes me as much more musical. While I've enjoyed my 325i's, the expereince was never as engaging as I've found the HF-1's to be.
The best way I can sum it up is that I couldn't be happy with the 325i as my only cans. But I definitely could be happy with the HF-1's pulling full-time duty. That said, I have NO plans of parting ways with my HD650/Zu, and the HF-1's will prove to be a great complement to them.
