My DIY Fullrange Speakers

Here is a DIY Fostex 126E based pair of speakers I made.

They sound incredibly good for what they cost to be built and for the simplicity of the cabinet.

The placement of these speakers is very easy and the depth of the stereo image is incredible!!

A recommended build for anyone in need of a couple of small but hi-fi sounding bookshelf monitors.

Nice work! I use a pair of Fostex FE167E's with the P10 hand-made phase plugs in a transmission line tuned to 42hz.. Good stuff.

gorgeous. what type of finish did you use on the BB - looks walnuty? thanks for sharing.

here's a pair of uFonkens with Fostex FF85K 3" drivers i just finished building with a friend - he's letting me break them in for him. finished with hammered gun-metal grey. they roll-off pretty steep below 80 Hz - fine for chamber and Indian classical. i have another set of drivers and cut BB for the cabs to build a pair for myself. i'm quite smitten with them and am looking for partnering sub plans as well. these FR Fostex drivers are quite the beguiling music makers.

Can these speakers with FE126/127 be used as near field listening, for example, on a desk? The sound of a pair of monitors is a little boring for me, compared to my Paradigm speakers, so I would like to try the sound rendered by some music speakers.

i know planet10/dave d. has Enabled FF85K as well which i am considering. i'm interested in your experience with the differences with stock vs. enabling.

Well, I'm buying the speakers from madisound and after I give them a listen I'll probably "enable" them myself. Having done some research it comes down to personal taste.

yzriver, yes these could be placed on a desk, yet I think there are even smaller Fostex drivers that would be more appropriate size-wize.

fishki, the color is natural plant wood stain. it is sold in dark powder and the density of the color can be adjusted to taste.

audiocats, the fostex website has some information, and gives also some pdfs where you can find the diagrams of the recommended speaker cabinets.

I also have more pictures that I took during the process if you would like to see step by step how it was made.

Hey,

as BMW said, it's a question of taste. I personally did not hear any difference, but liked the looks... We also listen with our eyes.

I love my P10'd FE167s. I have 6db of baffle step attenuation on them, but no crossover. They're great!

cool beans. coming from the "monitor-like" ATC speakers, these little uFonkens are certainly different - waaaay more presence and incisive mid-range. i only have <30 hrs on the drivers, but i've read that the Fostex drivers take a while to break in. i can't imagine a better mid-range and treble. i'm starting on the chassis for my partnering Nelson Pass/First Watt F5 amp this weekend. i don't know how much longer the Krell and ATCs will stick around.
