So I listen to music almost exclusively on the bus. Currently I use a Fiio e6 and HD 558, which is obviously less than ideal. I can play audio out through the USB port on my phone which is what I've been doing recently, but the DAC I have honestly sounds worse than the headphone jack. So I'm wondering of there is a pair of closed (over ear) headphones that has different sound than 558s and a DAC/amp that would pair well with it. My budget is $300 for everything.

Hi there,
Well, even if it's on-ear and not over-ear, I sure recommend the Beyer Dynamic DT1350 (or its successor, the 51p, that I haven't heard, though) : to me, it's the perfect can on the go. Of course, it reaches your budget by itself... But to start with it, you probably won't need any DAC and I'm sure you won't regret your purchase.
