My Anger at My Dorm's Unsanitary Conditions (not student involved)

Let the media get into this. It is so easy to break someones reputation that they spent years and years building. In seconds, your rep (in the public eye) can go down the pooper.

Write a press release and tell whoever is in charge, and/or the PR people that if they don't fix it, then the media will be involved. That will get things straight one way or another.

We have been making complaint all year and have received nothing.

The one girl currently has a lawsuit going with the school because they refused to do anything.

Yeah, I am glad that the president is taking care of this (with my help in the background) because I would not want to piss off the school. I know the deans pretty well, but I don't think that I would want a lawsuit with the school. However, getting the city involved would/should not harm us too much.

So they house you in subhuman conditions but you don't want to make trouble? Transfer to a better school, jeez. Take the money elsewhere. Post a youtube video as your parting shot and alert the local media. I know transferring is a pain, but no degree is worth your health like that. Don't you know that kind of mold is a very very serious hazard?

Germania - you need to take this to your city or county authorities. First off, the fire marshal needs to take a look around. If you call and say that a room has been occasionally catching fire, they will be interested in that. There should also be housing/safety inspectors from the county. They will inspect rental units (even if the school owns them) and force them to make repairs.

You should also contact Illinois Legal Aid:

Illinois Legal Aid Online | Homepage

They probably have attorneys who handle landlord/tenant problems for little or no cost. They might even be able to break your contract with the school. I can't say for sure in Illinois, but many states have what's called a warranty of habitability. That's a set of basic conditions a landlord must meet to rent a unit. If those conditions are not met, you could have the right to legally break your contract. I can't say for sure, but I strongly encourage you to talk to Legal Aid or another attorney.

You might want to invite the local paper by for a writeup, as well.

Please, take some action. That looks awful.

Agreed. Also maybe contact the school news paper or local paper and provide them with your pictures.

...and I thought my apt in college sucked.

haha just kidding, that's really brutal though. Oh boy I'm not looking forward to my first time living in a dorm next year as a freshman.

Wow, that's pretty disturbing. Burn that place to the ground =)

Ahh dorms

Reminds me of going 2 weeks without running water or bathrooms. That's an unfortunate situation, the mold crosses the line from funny-in-a-ghetto-way to irresponsible and dangerous though. I'd expect someone in the dorm has some connections that could prove fruitful?

wow that is unbelievable. I can't believe they let mold grow around like that and still let people live in there. I thought my school's worst dorm building was bad, but this is just dangerous.

So the mother of the girl who left came into the dorm today and knocked on my door.

We went above the people who were previously handling the issues to the dean of residential life and the dean of students. We certainly got a much different response from them. Considering all of the problems implicated thus far.....they might not have people live in this dorm next year.

They were originally planning on redoing all of the plumming in the place ove rthe summer, but it evident that much more than that needs to be done and simply painting over the mold does nothing.

So I might be getting my money back from living here this year, or at least part of it. The difference is that we have pictures from all over of the issue and the headaches are killing me, especially with the extra moisture of summer.

We will see how this pans out with the top level of the school administration. If nothing goes well, the city is ready to come in.

Pic and desciption of the place
Designed by Palmer, Hornbostel, & Jones in 1913-14 as part of the men's quadrangles. Intended as a residence hall for nonfraternity men, it was built at the cost of $35,544. It was named in honor of John R. Lindgren, a banker and businessman who held a longtime interest in Northwestern.
