Yeah it is a decent DAC. The price is right and I think it does well overall. The description used on PV website is pretty accurate.

I'll try take some pictures later tonight.

Are you the Australian Musiland dealer?

Can anyone make a comparison to the X-Dac V3? I currently own an X-Can V3 and run music from the PC, via an Edirol UA-1EX direct to the amp. The next step / upgrade path is a DAC and I was thinking of either:
- X-Dac V3, which I would use together with the Edirol sending out optical digital out from the Edirol to the X-Dac
- Musiland MD10 run direct via USB (would have no use for the Edirol as I assume it would be better to use the Musiland's USB input direct)

Cheers,
X

EDIT: one more question - does it support true ASIO 2.0 output via USB? In other words, would it be better to run it direct via USB with its ASIO drivers, or would it be better to run it via optical out from my Edirol UA-1EX which support and has its own ASIO drivers.

Hi xenithon!

I'm not sure what true ASIO 2.0 support is, but I can confirm that the ASIO2KS v1.0-1 drivers works with the MD10.
I can't say anything about how it compares to the Edirol UA-1EX because I haven't had a chance to use one yet.

But I have to assume that Edirol's own ASIO driver would work better then some generic ASIO driver, so I would probably keep the Edirol. Does the Edirol UA-1EX have RCA or BNC Coaxial outputs? Or is it only the optical output?

If anyone is interested, I can do a comparison between the MD10's USB input with the Behringer UCA202 and Xitel DG2. Both these are USB-to-SPDIF devices that use the ASIO2KS drivers and output an optical signal.

Hi there,

Thanks for the info. Essentially what I mean to ask is if it has its own ASIO drivers and can be run with proper ASIO in a program like foobar, and not something like ASIO4ALL (which I have read is inferior) or some faux ASIO which uses something like kernel streaming behind the scenes

The Edirol unfortunately only has optical digital out, via mini jack. I would thus need either a mini-Toslink adapter or a cable with mini-jack one side and Toslink on the other. If the ASIO driver works very well via USB on the Musiland I'd rather go for that in order to minimize the links in the chain. Only if the USB input is inherently bad for some reason or another would I prefer to keep the Edirol "in the loop".

I think ASIO2KS is one of those other faux ASIO drivers

It's some sort of kernel-streaming thing.

Hmmmm....ok. In that case I may keep the Edirol and use a cable. Something like the Van Den Hul optocoupler (primarily because it can be bought with one side mini and one side Toslink).

Thanks for the info John and we'll be in touch in the next few days

PS. if anyone else who has the MD10 has got it working with "real" ASIO do let us know

ok. I like it enough to keep it awhile. I need a real amp but the fact that the built in amp is bearable is a testament to this DACs quality. For the $$ it's every bit as good as a modded Zhalou but that's all I can compare it to without a seperate amp lol.

SELL ME A HEED, BADA OR DARKVOICE NOW!!!

Why would the 'free' ASIO implementations be inferior?

Ouch.

Any idea on where I can pick up a 'true' ASIO driver for USB output then?
