This probably goes without saying, but the encoding/decoding (e.g. sample rates, bit depth, filtering, etc.) in a recording and audio device can also effect the reproduction of details in both headphones and loudspeakers. As would some of the characteristics of the amp used to drive the headphones or speakers.
