MP-3 users, don't you regret going into "audiphile" relams ?

Well encoded 192kbps sounds just fine to me, there's a slight increase in SQ to 320kbps, but after that, I can't hear the difference.

Why bother with 192 kbps when there's Vorbis?

I find -q5 Vorbis (160 kbps VBR) to be better than -V0 mp3.
I havn't tested -q4 vs. -q5 Vorbis as of yet.
You notice the 'metallic' sund of mp3 compared to them.
I always rip CD's/FLAC file to Vorbis before putting them onto my D2. (Yes, I know I should put FLAC on but I want space tbh).

Hmmmm, let me give a couple of reasons...
* Software support
* Hardware support

I still buy nothing but cds. I do buy most of them used from a couple of local shops.
I then rip them to flac. I like having the cd as proof of ownership
if RIAA ever shows up at my door. If the unthinkable happens, I can re-create
my files from the original cds. Yes, I prefer higher bitrates.

Someone asked me if my tubes amps were my first entry into tubes.
I told them when I was young, all we had were tubes.

Sorry to bump the thread but...

Foobar (I think even Winamp supports Vorbis, not totally sure).
Cowon D2/ iPod with Rockbox plays Vorbis flawlessly so OGG Vorbis is a far better option.

Of course whether or not one would like to use Rockbox is another matter entirely.

I used Rockbox briefly on my iPod for FLACs but found syncing files too troublesome, and the UI while very cool in a nerdy sort of way, leaves a lot to be desired convenience-wise.

Foobar though is an essential tool for me, to supplement iTunes.

I'm lucky that I can't tell the difference between high quality encoded MP3s and source. But I do save my EAC ripped .wav files so that I can convert them into any other formats I might need in the future.

Your choices are still limited, whereas MP3 is supported by practictly any software or device you may be interested in.

Yeah, I was in a similar situation about a year ago. I have since switched to FLAC. The disappointing part is that there are very few FLAC online stores. I haven't found any that sells mainstream tracks.

download flac and 320kbps.

I plan on purchasing a 160 gig ipod for the sole purposes of 320kbps+ music. 30 gigs is too small man.

Where is a good place to buy FLACS then, they aren't commonly for sale. Any good online stores that offer FLAC downloads?

I only encode to FLAC L5 for my favorite albums and revert to MP3 V0 for everything else.
Honestly though, i can't hear the difference between the two; i guess my setup still has a long way to go..
As for regret, it would only be because of tracks encoded in <192 back in the time when storage space was at a premium

.

Seems a lot of people use 320 CBR instead of VBR V0

The space it saves(for a subtly lower quality file) is quite a good incentive i believe.
Heck, i even coded a simple custom style in foobar's columns ui interface that causes different bitrates to show up as varying linear RGB combinations(~rainbow) for the background of the line. Looks sweeet when the colours change while playing VBR files

Well I'm slowly spending more money on cd's than on my rig, which has it down sides and upsides. At least we support the artists if we buy their cds ;]

You Americans are lucky, cds are like 10 bux there, and shipping is like nothing. Aussies can pay up to $30 for a cd, which is why I import cd's from America and japan but then international shipping costs a fair bit as well ):

Recently I've been buying my CDs from eBay, even the most expensive only run $15US already including shipping (airmail runs about $6US);

otherwise it's usually under $10US shipped.

Certainly much better than the $20-30NZ at JB, and I've been able to find some artists that they never stock locally.
