So, i am getting my first can. I am sure you guys can give me some recs. I own an etymotic ER-4P, and i am looking for one with similar sound signature. Budget is $100~200. I am not getting an amp for now, and comfort is a must. Musical taste varies, as i like many genres, but rock is the main thing.

I've done some research, and i am considering Sennheiser 555/595 and 280, Denon D1000 and grado SR60. I prefer open headphones also. Thanks in advance, waiting for replies.

Before you go the HD595 route ...

Do some work and hunt down a pair of used HD580's ...

They are far far better headphones and scale well with various amps.

For the money, I can't think of a better headphone than the HD580 ... it's a sure thing in your price range.

or you could go down the AD700 route.

They are much better for rocking out than the senns that you mentioned. Unless you want to consider moving to the HD600/650 or finding a pair of HD580s used, I'd consider the Audio Technicas or Grados.

No contest. MS-1 is better. it's based on the grado sr125.

Do a little search on them. They are well regarded in the price range.

i am considering closed cans also now

The AD700 or MS-1 will most likely beat any closed can in the price range so I wouldn't recommend getting a closed can unless you need isolation. Both make great rock cans but the AD700 is a bit more versatile and has a much larger soundstage. The soundstage of the AD700 will amazing away coming from IEM's.

My friend just got the ad700, and the phone is in the burn-in period. For now, i think that the sound is too colored for my taste;

Anyone know how the AKG K240 is compared to the AD700? I saw that it is semi-open.
