A few weeks ago I was experimenting between MPEG4 and H.264 in Handbrake and the difference in encoding time was pretty dramatic. This was larger resolution than discussed here though. Just wondering if there is any advantages to using H.264 except maybe disk space. Plus I'm not sure how the ratio 480 x 480 would be handled (though I suppose this could be adjusted too).

blessingx, i frequently use handbrake to get mpeg4 movies at 320 horizontal for my wife's treo. even using the wonderful tcpmp software for the treo, which is supposed to play h.264 files, i can't get it to work. so, i end up using mpeg4, which works fine and encodes MUCH MUCH quicker than h.264. anyway, i think the advantage to h.264 is that at the same bitrate, it looks better than mpeg4...at least at 640x480, it's evident. i'm not sure how noticeable the differences are at 320x240. h.264 also requires more processing power, so i imagine that it would drain the battery faster. i would probably use mpeg4 if possible.

on another note, for mac users a free program called USBVision Exporter became available today...it's supposed to transcode from various QT formats w/out getting a QTPro license...and i've heard it's faster than QT, though i haven't tested it yet. probably worth trying, especially if you want to transcode AVI files into .mov or .mpg.

I don't think that guide is that good.

With Videora iPod Converter v0.9, H.264 now works with either the presets or a custom-made preset. I'm still using mpeg4 though (in Nero Recode, but Videora can do the same) because I can encode at 3-4x real-time on a 18-month old PC (P4 3.0GHz) versus 1x real-time using H.264. With the bigger supported resolution of mpeg4 for better display output and little detectable difference at the small 320x240 res between the two, I don't see any reason to go with H.264.

MeGUI profiles here

There's a few implementations of MPEG4 or .264, some info here

I have convert maybe 12 videos and one movie with Videora Converter. I use the standard setting and only run into one problem. When converting a *.mov file, it converted the file, iTunes would play it, I pushed it to the ipod but when playing the file on ipod I only get a black screen.

But all of the other files I converted with Videora Converter, the quality looks to be great. Maybe I could adjust the setting for high resolution, but for the player, I don't think it is going to matter. Maybe if I were to play on a TV, I might want a better resolution. I have yet to try to play from ipod to the TV.
