Earlier today I tried removing the felt discs covering the driver (just behind the foam in the earcup). It seems very amplifier dependent but aside from some very minor added clarity somewhere in the lower treble there was also a more irritating peak in the upper treble. I assume it was around the 7khz peak. It reminded me a bit of the high pitched whine put out by certain lights or electronics; you don't really notice it till you turn it off and it's a relief and you realize how it was grating your nerves. I glued the discs back in.
I think I found one of the Achilles heels of the Beyer. I can't be certain without a reference amp/dac to power them with the best recordings, hover I tried a wide variety of songs of various quality. The Beyer just can't seem to reproduce the body and textured woody resonances of the Violin. It sounds just flat and thin, no romance. It's very clear but that's about it. The Cello fairs alot better.
