I find the HD650 more comfortable; the headband on the K701 hurts after a while. But I prefer the sound of the K701 in my current setup. So I just move the headband on my head after about an hour, and all is well. For me, the HD650 was about the most comfortable phone I ever owned. I could wear it for hours.
before break-in, i'd have to pick the k701's. the clamping of the hd650's on my jaw was a bit uncomfortable. after break-in though, the hd650's loosened up, eliminating the clamp, and became the better of the two. the k701 headband is pretty poorly designed imo...that larger pad in the center becomes increasingly uncomfortable the longer it sits on my head.
I prefer the HD-650 comfort. The pads fit me very snugly and it is soft. The K701 pads, which are similar to and I actually found even harder than K601's, are not as plush and can feel annoyingly out of place the first time.
Initially, the HD 650's will clamp like hell, making them extremely uncomfortable. As you wear them more often, however, the clamp will dissipate, and in this state they are ultimately more comfortable than the K701's.
I always thought the 701 would be the more comfortable can due to the round pads. I say that because I've always felt my DT770s were one of the most comfortable cans I've every tried/owned. However, the 701's round pads are a touch too big and I feel them "too far forward" on the top of my cheek bones, which I found uncomfortable. The HD650s are intensely comfortable for me and can be worn for hours on end with no issues whatsoever. HD650 gets my vote.
the k701 is a bit heavy and hurts the top of your head after a while. on the other hand, the hd650 tries to crush your skull to get that perfect seal. so it's a toss up. nothing beats the dt880s (either model) in terms of comfort for a full size headphone.
I find the 650's cups have more "presence" on my ears whereas the 701 kind of encircle my ears, which to me, is more comfortable. The headband is not an issue in either.
