I do have a Modmic UNI with my DT1990/ HD660S and it sounds great, try bossting the recording device audio on control panel settings.

Are the magnets safe to be put on a planar magnetic? I'm worried it'll damage the drivers.

I've had them and it depends where you mount it, the magnet on those is pretty strong. I just got a desk mic and use Nvidia broadcast which really filters background noise. It was $13 on Amazon and came with a USB dongle and really long cable so no ground noise issues and for voice chat it's fine. Rather just slide it out of the way than stick a magnet on my Hifiman he400i.
