my old 2001 sharp minidisc portable sounds better than my ipod nano, crazy!!!!

just recorded some stuff from my pc via optical cable

i think the old legacy minidisc shortplay is something like 252kb/s so it should easily lick my 192kb/s mp3 files.

this it does by a mile...

i also think the internal amp in the sharp is better than the ipod nano as i get decent bass out of it

to bad it's limited to 80 mins of music, but it runs of AA batteries!!!! i have had some cracking times with it over the years.

anybody else prefer minidisc over mp3

I recently bought a MD player to replace the two I sold last year.
I downloaded a lot of tunes for it back then and hate to see it go to waste.
Now, I'm making Live recordings with a homemade mic.
My next thing is either a soundcard with optical out or a vintage Sony PCDP with optical out.

firstly, nano is not exactly reknowned for its sound quality.
secondly, minidisc players, especially Sharp's are reputed for their sound quality. i'm still mesmerised by the sound coming out from my dr7.

the nano sounds great, just a bit lacking in base, it's just that the minidisc is so much better

you getting the new sony rh1? i'm thinking about it?

I'm hoping with the release of the next generation of md players that the prices on the older ones will drop. Though I would love to get one of these I really can't justify spening so much on one.

What ever happened to Sharp and Panasonic? Have they completely gotten out of the md business? I was really hoping someone else would come out with himd besides Sony.

Try listening to a Nano (or Shuffle) with a file ripped in a better format than 192k MP3. Even AAC sounds better, so does OGG, if you slip some Linux on your iPod.

Best of all, try a lossless file. Nanos and Shuffles sound terrific with those.

Apple's flash-based players sound quite good with good encoding.

It's not your MD that sounds better but the Atrac! Sony worked for years to get a good sound out of it(and it worked). My old Sony MD sounds better than my Ipods(even when I use an AIFF). And I know the sharp had better sound than the Sony. A little info for ya all, Sony and Apple pay royalties to DolbyLabs for the same technology, Sony for Atrac and Apple for AAC.

hi there, i know a lot about atrac as i used to use it a lot, although the new atracplus codec is fab, i think the better sound in my sharp arises from good quality output amps in the player itself.
