Has anyone tried using a Sony Minidisc (deck player/recorder) as a DAC?

I got a MDS-JE520 and I connected it to my Mac Pro via Optical, and it's analog outputs to my Hifiman EF2 headphone amp, and hit "Record" on the deck with no minidisc in it, which turns on "DA" mode, essentially turning it into a live DAC, and it seems to sound very interesting.

It's quite warm with tamed treble, but at the same time, very "Sony" like (aka, that mega bass stuff)..

/yea.. doesn't play MD's though.. says disc read error while reading TOC...

If it's anything, someone rates a low-end MD player better than a Musical Fidelity V-DAC (which in turn is rated by many to be better than the Cambridge Audio DACMagic) purely used as a DAC here:

Thanks for the info. It works with my MDS-JE510. It sounds better than Yamaha CD-S300's DAC. Once I get Schiit Modi 3 delivered, i will post about comparison among Schiit Modi, DragonFly black, and MDS-JE510.
So far very promising.

I have a Sony MDS-JE330. My DACs are a Dragonfly Red and Black and a Schiit Modi 3+. I might try this some evening when I feel like playing around.

Agreed, most forums the basic search function can be rough, sometimes advanced search is better. I gave up on forum searches years ago and just do site searches using Google, Duck Duck Go or most other search engines. The syntax can vary and you can always use the advanced search for a search engine to do site searches, but this syntax works with most search engines:

search terms here site:https://url of the site you want to search

Lots of variations and options on this syntax, like most search engines allow you to leave out the https:\\. I think Google allows you to put the site first followed by the search terms. I use the syntax above on both Google and Duck Duck Go and it works every time.

How did the minidisc dac compare to the Schiit? I have someone local selling a sony jb920 for a pennies and im interested in listening to something a little different than my topping e30/l30 stack. Plus, if I ever head back to my parents house I'm pretty sure they kelp all my old minidiscs.

They are different but I can't pick my favorite. Schiit Modi is clean and dry but I eventually settled with it for conveniency. Sony is the most organic sound. You don't get tired of listening to music. Dragonfly is strong with base but lower end is muddy (good with old rock recordings). JB920 is a high end deck. I'd get it if the price is right.
