What will a Mini³ (with a gain of ~5) do to the sound of Grados (SR 225) with a portable?

Or if you havn't used them with a 225, what did they do wth whatever headphones you used?

gain of 2 or 3 is just fine for a grado. it has a really punchy bass. a grado ccould do a lot better on bass departmen

To help understand gain, here is a quick chart

Gain (in x)/ db
1/ 0
2/ 6
3/ 9.5
4/ 12
5/ 14
6/ 15.5
7/ 17
8/ 18
9/ 19

Numbers are rounded, formula is 20*log(gain)

How about with an AKG k501?

I am curious about others opinions on this as well. I own the Mini3 and I just purchased a pair of used AKG 501s. I have no experience with 501's other than with this amplifier, so I cannot make a complete statement about this combo. That being said, although the Mini3 gives the 501's more low end and a bigger sound stage than unamped, I am not sure if it is enough power to truly bring the 501's to their full potential.

What are people's opinions on this matter?

A more powerful home-based amp will bring them to "full potential", but I like the Mini3 and tried them with K501, not bad, but more power would be helpful.

How does it compare with same price range desk top amp?

First off I listen at very low volumes. So I am one of those who feels that a portable amp can drive cans like the K501 well. As an example I am currently listening to my K501 driven by an X-Can V2 and earlier via an O1 Amp/Dac.

The volume pot on both was at about 8:30 which for me was more than loud enough. Although I prefer the sound of the MiniBox-E+ the Mini^3 IMO drives the K501 well. Good luck.
