Meze Audio 109 Pro

Hi guys, I'm currently looking to upgrade my Beyerdynamic T90. I'm not quite sure what exactly it should be. My focus is of course primarily on the sound, but aesthetics and build quality are also high on my list.

Of course, the Meze 109 Pro, the Denon 9200 and the new Fostex TH616 immediately come to mind. You read a lot of good things about the Meze, as well as the Denon. The Fostex is rather poor.

As far as music is concerned, I listen to a lot of singer-songwriters (e.g. Dermot Kennedy), acoustic and occasionally something in the classical or pop genre.

Could be the 109 a kinda perfect can for me?
i barley listen to solo singers i find it kinda boring without anything going on in the backround.
but to me vocals are pushed forward (compared to a 660s 2) and they are very alive and airy sounding.
but you should give them a try before you decide to buy them, it is a headphone you need some time with.

Has anyone tried these in combination with the Cayin RU7 dongle?
Not RU7,

but I enjoy the 109s (balanced 4.4mm) with my iPad Pro >> RU6. This ZZ Top track reveals a nice taught bass, forward vocals and crisp electric guitar and cymbals.

https://tidal.com/browse/track/297936

Switching over to my single ended HiFi M8, the extra power elevates the sound another notch across the board. For EDM and sub bass listen to Daft Punk Solar Sailor

https://tidal.com/browse/track/165842039

I conclude that the 109s scale well with more power.

How well does the 109 work with eq? I find it too much hazzle typing in evrery single number in peace so i just keep going with the stock sound and i am happy with it. But do they sound better with some eq? Would some share their settings?

After an audition a couple of days ago I knew these were for me, did not find the need to use the EQ with every other track like I was doing with Sundara's.
Also found everything sounded more natural, today they arrived at 7.30 am and I instantly connected them to the pc for some burn in.
Looking forward to using them.

I am something of a convert on this issue. I came from the 2 channel world, where room correction makes EQ a necessity IMO. When I got my 109s, I started by EQing. I was, at the time, using the Questyle M12 dongle off my iPad Pro to drive the headphones. While I appreciated the detail and sound stage, it sounded somewhat etched and relatively thin. I also had to listen at 70% due to not having a ton of power reserve. I experimented a lot with parametric EQ in Roon (using oratory and other charts). I eventually got a new Modius E/Asgard 3 Schiit stack, and after a long time I feel confident in saying that it provides a smoother, less etched upper-mid/treble and a meatier bass response. Another benefit was a larger perceived sound stage (more precisely, larger scale of sound). I say all this to say that since I got better electronics, I’ve slowly eliminated more and more bands from my EQ profile except just a subbass boost by 2 dBs below 100 Hz (Q = 0.6). I’ve noticed that the more you EQ this headphone above bass, the more you lose sound stage and spatial qualities. And these are some of my favorite qualities of the 109.
On a more philosophical note, the more I’ve come to appreciate high-end headphones, I see these companies as having made very specific choices to make it sound the way it does. You wouldn’t go to an expensive restaurant with a famous chef and take their exquisite creations to a kitchen to recook the dish. So why do it with these exquisite (audio) creations? It’s ok to sprinkle a bit of salt and pepper on top, but you don’t want to completely change the sound signature with EQ. It kills the magic.
Hope this helps.

Hey everyone,

I just recently purchased the 109 Pro and have been using it for a week or so. Since then I’ve gotten an itch to upgrade the cables to a balanced one to connect to my Cayin RU7. As I’m new to this hobby (I did some research but thought I’d ask), I do have a few questions:

1. Will I noticed a difference using the balanced port compared to the 3.5mm port that the headphones are currently connected to in my DAC?
2. I’ll be purchasing in CAD so the prices are as followed for the two cables I’m considering. My questions about these cables are will I notice a difference upgrading to one of these two vs. the cable that was supplied in the box? And is there a difference between the sliver vs. copper that warrants the large increase in price?

$179 CAD for the MONO 3.5 MM SILVER-PLATED UPGRADE CABLES

Or

$349 for the MONO 3.5 MM COPPER PCUHD PREMIUM CABLES

Thank you!

Would suggest you have a read on page 207, some different options there.
Same as yourself have had the 109's for just over a week but spending that much on cables was a no no for me so have ordered some from a local guy, shall be arriving tommorow I hope.

I just got my RU7. Sounding good single ended, but I also wonder about the balanced connection.

Need some advice please as have not experienced this before, have today received a balanced braided cable and it is annoying the hell out of me, whenever I twist my neck or move I can hear the friction of the cable running against my clothes straight to the headphones and also does it when not really touching anything, just twisting my neck.
Cannot hear it when playing but very noticeable between tracks, noticed the 3.5 plugs are much longer than the original. With the cable that came with the 109's and also have another from a third party this does not happen, any ideas ?

Would you say there would be an audible difference between the cord you suggested vs this one? I understand the quality of the cable will differ but I’m more curious if I’ll notice any difference in what I hear.

i wonder, do you miss having a planar after you got the 109 pro? or which planar do you own and which one do you prefer?
sometimes i do miss having a planar since i gave my sundara to a good friend of mine and made him really happy with it.
i am constantly thinking if i should get something like an audeze x or an ananda.
but still the comfort of the 109 is unbeatable and the sound quality is on point for my ears

Gah I see you have the same struggles I have. It was a real toss up between the Arya V2's and the 109's for me. I liked the Arya sound better, but I needed something with high build quality and comfort more which caused me to choose the 109's.
