A big part of how much I can enjoy a band is dependent on my appreciation of the vocals. For the purposes of this thread I want to ignore power metal style vocals (ala Dream Theater, Edguy, etc...). I really dig the singer from Opeth. Both past and present singers from Killswitch Engage float my boat too. What metal bands do you find have interesting dirty vocals?

Andromeda, Mastodon, and Solitude Aeturnus? after constant recommendations, i decided to go for those, along with a few Opeth CDs. it seems to me that they are just too much for me so.. might suit you well..

By far my favorite vocalist in this style is Lord Worm from the band Cryptopsy, especially off of their second album "None So Vile." He's inhuman!

The dude from Shape of Despair is pretty awesome too. Oh, and also Halo.

Skinless all the way...brutal.

I'm not sure I get the "filthy" "brutal" lyrics thing. What is the turn on? Does it get your testosterone going?

I guess to me it seems kinda evil. Walking on the dark side of music is an interesting experience occasionally .... but at the end of the day it basically leaves me feeling disturbed.

I tend to go for pretty specific vocals in my metal. I break it down as follows:

Screaming/Yelling: Slayer, Death by Stereo, Unearth

Wailing/Falsettos: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, 3 Inches of Blood

Cobra Commander: At the Gates, 3 Inches of Blood

Clean/Dirty/Insane/Altered: Electric Wizard, Sleep

Recently, my favourite vocals is from the guy in Agalloch, especially the growling, it sounds so cool and blends with the dark atmosphere of the music perfectly. I'm not sure whats the exact term used but I think the type of growling used is called rasping?
