By looking at the schematic, I noticed that they cheated and used a few solid state diodes... But it's still impressive.

Impressive, but why? Why all the tubes? It probably explains in the text, but I don't know German.

Milkpowder- he used tubes for all the timing circuits. Actually, a whole lot of those tubes are for the power supply, too. It's impressive.
The other Nixie tube clock that blew my socks off was one where a guy used a 6502 for a timing circuit. For those of us who loved the old Apple ][, the 6502 is near and dead to our hearts.
