MDR-SA5000 in US for $380
Mar 22, 2005 at 12:22 AM Post #91 of 203
I placed my order on Friday late afternoon. On Sunday and this morning they told it is in stock and assured me that it will be shipped today. Since I didn't get track info yet, so I called them again this afternoon around 5PM. This time they told me it is in backorder and I have to wait for a week to have it in stock again. I argued, but they said it is a common mistake. I was totally speechless. BTW I wonder how did they get those SA5000? From Sony USA or imported from Japan? Hard to believe they are the only store in US to have it in stock.

How can you have it in stock and claim that it is on backorder status??

Oh, ok. Finally a link that works. This has been an interesting thread even though i'm not personally interested in those headphones. Though for the original $380 i would've been tempted, even with my R10s.

I just got mine today, yes the stand is included. What a nice looking can. $380 was charged. Thanks to backdrifter letting me know this price and recommending me Sony SA's for classical music.

I cannot tell much about the sound quality as I don't have enough experience with headphones (HD600, ER4P, E5c, that's all I have), and I played this SA5000 only 30 minutes. Chord DAC 64 as a source, musical fidelity X-Cans V2 as an amp, SA5000 has surely faster response than HD600 does. It has noticeably brighter signature than HD600, but it does not mean bass is lacking. As it's already well known, HD600 has far sweeter mid range.

Some other headphones and amps are on their way to me, I will write a follow-up later.

I just ordered mine for $380. I was told they are out of them at the moment (thanks to head-fi) and should have the new order in by next week. I will wait and see.

No problem backdrifter.
Since I have been upgrading and changing stereos (not head-fi's) for 20 years, I know well about the fact that "what you like most is the best" and "try yourself, don't listen what others are saying".

I sometimes think this hobby, headphone or speaker, is all about enjoying the difference, just like you try different food from time to time. More gears you have, more enjoyable this hobby becomes.
SA5000 may turn out to be just another piece of cans, but I will enjoy the difference.

Anyway, I'll also try upgrading the cable for my HD600, and probably I'll get HD650 if I don't be satisfied with that.

Did you order after they raised the price? How did you get it for $380 as in what did you discuss with them?

You'll have a $670.00 SA5000 at your door on Saturday. Since it is more expensive - it should sound better than any other SA5000 out there...

ok now you can kill me
