Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements

I'm feeling that "HD58x + sub $100 dac/amp (schiit fulla 2, fiio e10k, DFB, fx audio dac-x6...)" will be the standard recommendation for newcomers.

They excel with better source ,tried with Fiio Q1, Modi,D50 and R2R ,for best results you still need quality stack
Well, better in=better out, I don't deny it, but keep in mind I am talking about newcomers or people on a budget (like me)

These days my budget on gear is very limited due to tuition costs for my kids.
I've spent a good bit of money on this hobby in the past.
I'm completely happy using these cans with my Cavalli MCTH, and Mimby.
Hard to believe the sound that this rig throws out, for the little invested. I don't miss anything that I've previously owned. Lol

It seems like everybody in this thread loves the sound of 58X. I unboxed them too today and cannot really comment on the sound (which seems reasonable and comparable to HD599/HD579 for my non-audiophile ear) but the comfort level is quite bad. I am trying to stretch them out to reduce clamping force so lets see.. The 58X ear pad hole/opening is quite noticeably smaller than 599/579 and the 58X ear pads are also stiffer than 599 ones. Right now I have been using 599 for about 2 days so they are not necessarily stretched out too much. But as of right now when I am wearing the 599 it feels that it has almost disappeared but 58X is noticeable and even painful after a couple of minutes.

the clamp is almost not existent to me but as you burn them in the sound will improve.
but you need an amp even though they are much easier to Drive than the 600s or 650s you still need a decent amp / Dac to really make them sing.

luckily you can use an older less expensive Dac / Amp like the fiio e17 or some of their newer offerings will really impress without spending $100s of dollars.

but I still have some jvc Bass heavy cans and even a pair of Skullcandy Aviators that are just fun and worth keeping around once you get these dialed in you will start to hear things in a track you may have listened to for years that's when you will have your aha moment but just because these are quickly building a strong following does not mean you will have to love them.
I bought my first electrostatic Headphones in the early 70s and preferred my cheapo Sansui's so I would guess after time you will enjoy these but if not I don't think you will have a problem selling or trading them who knows maybe planar magnetics are your bag.

either way good luck

@J The Killer - The famous Sennheiser clamp, which disappears over use, you can fasten the process by 'gently' and 'firmly' stretching them out - either with your hands or a good set of books (roughly the size of your melon). The pads will break-in over time as well.

There are many fans of the 598/99 series as there are 58x/6xx fans.(<---These naming schemes I tells ya!) Would be interesting to see what headphone you prefer in this case going forward!

579/599 dont sit on my ear lobes but 58X do, which makes the higher clamping force an even bigger issue for me. The force will decrease over time after stretching but the ear pads are not getting any bigger...

I measured the ear pad hole sizes and there seems to be a big difference.
Sennheiser HD579/599:
41mm (inside width)
70mm (inside height)

Sennheiser HD58X:
35mm (inside width)
60mm (inside height)
22mm (inside depth)

From what I gather 6' series are almost same size as 598/599/579. Do HD6XX/6' series ear pads fit perfectly on 58X? I have measured the ear frame size of 58X is 111mm (where the ear pad goes) and ear pad external height is 104mm (picture attached). Can anyone please take their 6' series ear pads out and measure them ?

I can say that the HD380pro's pads are also bigger than the 6' series but both are comfy for my head/ears, have you tried adjusting ear cup sliders down a bit to accommodate? Also the cushion under the headband takes time to soften up too!

I gave in and ordered a pair, should be here in a few weeks (if like my K7XX and HD6XX which took about a month to get to Hawaii). Will let them burn-in for a few days/week, and then take them my friends place and do some comparisons between HD600, HD650, HD660S and a few others. Will also try with different setups from phone (Galaxy S8/S9, iPhone 8/X, LG v20) to decent gear (Lyr2, Elise, DarkStar, MHA-100, Icon HP-8 mk2, HA-501, Musette, Pagoda, Liquid Carbon, CTH, EC ZDS, Mimby, Bimby, BH Crack, BH Mainline, Magni3, and what ever else my friends bring over).

@J The Killer to reduce clamp, slide out the metal part completely and bend it locally, keeping both hands on the slider: this way you'll avoid cracking or snapping the headband (this is an advice by Solderdude of DIYAudioHeaven)
