Is because of the reproduction of tracks like "No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun" by Steven Wilson (Insurgentes album, 2016 remaster) that the 5909 is proving a very excellent headphone. In the busy parts this is even more evident.

The ML 5909 has just been dethroned in terms of most expensive wireless headphones (not including special editions such as the Berluti H95).. Their name: "T+A Solitaire T" with an MRSP of €1300,00... Where does it end? 🙈🤔😂

The T+A Solitaire T isn't for me because have artificial leather ear cups (for me real leather ear cups is 100% necessary for avoiding hot and sweating ears)

July... But in order to eclipse the 5909 they have to be really really good as the 5909 have raised the bar almost inaccessibly high...
Tbh I’m not even sure how easy it will be to find those in America lol…some of those European brands are stupendously hard to find if you don’t live in NYC or LA, which I don’t,

Long time lurker here :)

In case people have not found out, the bass is noticeable better (or at least much more noticeable) with ANC turned on compared to off. It is like completely different cans. When playing something bass heavy, things go from "meh" to "wow".

Not really an audiophile myself so I let others decide on actual difference in terms of frequency response etc but this could perhaps explain why some people report the bass to be much better than others. Also note that while the app don't work in passive mode (and quite often does not work at all), the ANC button still works even in passive mode.

Not sure if it matters, but is it possible to get a PC to identify the 5909s as headphones instead of speakers when connecting via the USB-C?

Also, is there a reason to think that the 3.5 mm with DAC etc could produce even better sound than the USB-C connection? I assume that the built in DAC is good enough for the cans but that's just an assumption on my end. The ANC needed for bass has me thinking of if the same can be accomplished without ANC with EQ.

if you want to send an analog signal to the headphones you need to use the 3.5mm terminated cable. unless im missing something trying to use the USB to USB cable to send an analog signal will almost assuredly be impossible

Correct..

USB-C to USB-C will make the ML function as an external DAC/AMP + Headphone

3.5mm to USB-C wil male the ML function as a passive headset (by using unused pins of the USB-C connector to transport the analog signal). Internal DAC/AMP are bypassed.

When ANC is turned on, the feedback mechanism is activated. When it's off - and I believe also when using transparency mode for the 5909 as it's a bit old school in terms of electronics -, it's deactivated.
The feedback mechanism ensures that a certain digital value always results in a specific SPL below a certain frequency, regardless of the amount of leakage / pad compression that occurs on someone's head.
Without it response response may vary between individuals at lower frequencies.
The difference people may experience between the modes where the feedback mechanism is activated and the ones where it isn't may vary between individuals and ear simulators / methodologies, depending on how the 5909 "couples" with their anatomy :
