I live in the midrange!
Every once in a while, I find my way to something quite surprising. In this instance, it's an album by one of Mark Lanegan's more recent side projects, Soulsavers - It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land.

I've been cleaning up my basement all day, which always puts me in a bad mood. I've also been listening to new music on Rhapsody through the ****ty satellite speakers on my 3rd computer. Then came this album...and I was enjoying it so much that I ran upstairs and grabbed my AKG Sextets and hooked up my RSA XP-7 to the Silverstone EB-01 DAC. Ahhh...MUCH better!!

There is a cover of "No Expectations" that is as haunting as it is gorgeous to listen to. The whole album is littered with surprises like that...I recommend it highly.

Oh, and by the way, another side project, The Gutter Twins, is also well worth checking out.

I've been a fan of this guy since The Screaming Trees and "Alice Said". His solo album Bubblegum is an underrated classic IMHO. I've also enjoyed his collaboration with Isobel Campbell a great deal. I'm not crazy about Queens of the Stone Age, but oh well...can't have everything.

I'm currently awaiting the most recent collaboration with Isobel Campbell, Sunday At Devil Dirt. I can't wait...and I'm thinking I'll have to hunt these other ones down too.

So who else around these parts has kept up with this guy lately? Not that it wouldn't have been easy to miss something...he's been as productive as Ryan Adams lately, but with nowhere near the public scene.

I know MarkL is big fan and he will chime in here..........

I am huge Screaming Trees from 1990s and early 1980s work on SST label, have a Mark Lanegan album when he first left Screaming Trees. Will have to dig that out since I haven't listened to it in long time.

There is no doubt that Screaming Trees were the most under rated group from the whole NW Grunge scence, they were great!

Most all of his work that I've heard is excellent, though particularly with Queens of the Stone Age, the greatest band in the world.

Well, I bought the Soulsavers and Gutter Twins albums today in a fit of impulse buying. Listened to them all the way home, and can't wait to give a listen with something better than my car stereo.

I was lucky enough to see him with QOTSA lin London a few years back - blinding gig!

I too am a big fan - Screaming Trees, solo and his more recent collaborative projects.

Gutter Twins "Saturnalia" is great and I do find myself going back to "Bubblegum" a lot - some great stuff with PJ Harvey on that one.

I consider myself a big Mark Lanegan fan, got all his solo stuff, gutter twins on CD and Vinyl, a few Screaming trees albums, all QOTSA, all Twilight Singers, but missed the Soulsavers, so I have now ordered this. Thanks!

Didn't realize that Lanegan was involved with QOTSA, appears he hooked up with Josh Homme & crew starting with 2002 Songs for the Deaf album and also 2005 Lullabies album.......long music career for Lanegan since first album for Screaming Trees dates back to 1986

He was friends with Josh from QOTSA and in and around the "desert rock" scene for a while.

He appears on Rated R and has worked on the Desert Sessions albums as well.

I was listening to this only the other day - great album. I love Layne's voice - Alice in Chains were always a favourite of mine, especially their Unplugged effort.

Oh well - another talent gone early.

I don't listen to them as much these days, but Blues for the Red Sun is a stone cold classic.

To me he seemed to be struggling with drugs badly if you watch the video, looks like hes in pain the whole time. On such notes, I wonder if cornell will ever come around and produce something grungy sounding again...

I never really got into the Screaming Trees... something about his voice I just didn't "get." But I do like much of the music mentioned here (LOVE QOTSA and Alice In Chains), so I may have to check Mark's stuff out again. I had looked into Bubblegum not too long ago... guess I'll have to take the plunge!
