Break-in changes are small. The most likely factor is that you have just gotten used to a new frequency response signature and the second factor is a lack of proper seal on the pads. It the pads and not the drivers that actually make the most significant (relatively) change to the sound. Finally, you can't ignore factors such as the store applying EQ to bring up the bass and treble.

After comparing a set of akg k142 made in austria vs made in china, I bought two pairs of k142. One for work, and one for home. Not sure if I should've done that.  But still love akg sound signature.  Anyway, the austrian made pair seems to have a difference.
 
Thinking of modding it later by removing the strip of foam inside to see if sound clears up.
