I'm always on the hunt for good live recordings.

Good bootlegs/live recordings are really hard to find; I mean ... the sort that don't include artifacted and poorly mic'd arrangements that simply don't work well with high end gear. Those who are in to bootleg listening will know what I mean; we throw out 75% of that which we find: those distant and thin, "youtubish" type live recordings that simply do not work with a decent amp and your set of HD650's or RS1's.

That said ...

There does just so happens to be ONE of my favorite bands that is painstakingly consistent and meticulous in the constant publishing of their live recordings.

Live recordings that you have to comb through to find the gems but that in the end will offer you some fantastic room recording listening if you so chose to take the time to dig through them.

I'm talking about Magnolia Electric Company ... an 'everyman' sort of indie/alt country outfit that writes fantastically domestic and well thought out songs, with a front man that is ever whispering his way towards underground stardom.

Anyway, I thought I might post a few links here to several of their more sweet sounding .FLACs.

Keep in mind (and I'll provide a link) that all of these shows are available for free download at their main website ... but for the sake of this post, I wanted to highlite a few choice examples that I've stumbled upon. For each, I'll link to a specific song and then to the page that features the remaining tracks for that show.

Each and every one of these songs is special if only for the quality of the live recording and the rather typical and expected passion with which the players deliver their message.

From recording to recording, you'll find that the specific approach to documenting the show will result in a wide variety of sound staging: some recordings place you on stage with the band and some put you 20 feet back.

All in all ... if you've the time to investigate, it makes for some incredibly fun and valuable listening material (especially if you happen to be a fan of Magnolia Electric Co. (Songs Ohia, etc.).

So here goes.

< PLEASE NOTE!! ALL SONGS LINKED TO HERE ARE MADE FREELY AVAILABLE BY THE COPYRIGHT OWNERS/PUBLISHERS!!! AIN'T NO VIOLATIONS HAPPENING HERE, YO!!>

Show: Cafe del Teatre Escorxador - Lleida, Spain - 2007
Track: Hold On Magnolia

GET TRACK: GET IT

This particular show happens to be recorded in a way (unlike most others) that puts you pretty far back in the room; the front man's commentary is not so up front and overall the band sounds like it's about 20 to 30 feet away from the listening point; nonetheless, the instrumentation and spirit of the performed song is quite lovely and true.

Show: Bottle Tree - Birmingham, Alabama - 2006
Track: The Dark Don't Hide It

GET TRACK: GET IT

This show/song is just the lead singer and an acoustic guitar and it's fantasticly performed (and recorded by the on-site sound team).

The room dynamics and overall sound quality is about as good as it gets. You'll hear the bartender washing glasses, various whispers and claps from the somewhat small audience in attendance, doors creaking open and every comment/foot tap of the front man as he sees to his most finely rendered performance; obviously ... I LOVE this particular recording and show. There's hardly any noise floor to speak of other than the high pitched (barely audible) whine of the performers amp and the somewhat soft but persistent white noise of the rooms ambience/air conditioning.

Show: Mystic Theatre - Petaluma, CA - 2007
Track: Astrabel

GET TRACK: GET IT

This is yet another full band recording of Magnolia Electric Co.

I especially love the particular song linked to because the trumpet comes through so nice and solid. Also, the overall tone of the show is quite clear and one gets the impression of standing in a small venue with a so so house PA while a rather exceptional outfit does their thing onstage.

The background noise is subtle but by the sound of the continuous roar of the crowd ... I get the impression that it's an audience of 300 or more. A very fun/fine recording ...

Anyway ...

That's just a few of the many recordings available from Magnolia Electric Company's main website.

If you might be interested in perusing all of their posted .FLACs, then feel free to visit this page: Magnolia Elec. Co. Live Music!!

...

Enjoy.

Thanks for the links!

Hate to admit it, but I didn't even know the Magnolia Electric Co. existed before I saw your thread. A few clicks later and they've got a new fan. I love this kind of music and just got finished ordering a few discs, as well.

I've picked up on so much good music here in the Music Forum. Thanks, s1rrah! I know these discs will be getting a lot of spins, and I love that these guys release on vinyl, too.

Glad you dug the recs mang!

Quite the prolific bunch of writers, Magnolia ... and somewhat of an alt country/indie acquired taste ... but they definitely got me hooked once I realized they were actually writing good songs (love all the symbolism and myth) ...

I'm sure they'll be pleased to see you in their log files.

(I mean, c'mon ... any band that is so dedicated to publishing their shows is certainly watching server stats!)

BUMP: pimp'n for magnolia.

They go to great lengths to make high quality .flacs of their shows available. Dig through the library and find the gems. They're there.

If you have a really detailed and highly resolving system, then I might suggest you check out the 12.06.06 Birmingham show.

Certain tracks in that set will have you looking around your room ...
